Description (EN)
"Shared Habitats II" (as an extension and deepening of the Shared Habitats project) understands our habitat as one in which we are not alone: we share it with countless fellow beings near and far, with other living beings, things, machines, and artifacts. Our well-being is built on an atmosphere created over epic periods of time by the action of these beings, which is not divisible but shared destiny.

In the project we align artistic action and ideological reflection with possible new forms of coexistence between human and non-human actors. In experiments, actions, interventions, artifacts, designs will be tried out and evaluated.

In the module we want to produce construction kits, sample catalogs, istallations, manuals, recipes, action plans, apparatuses, game plans or other forms of proposals that help to make our civilization sustainable, thriving and peaceful.

Description (DE)

- What happened in the blank petri dish？

CONCEPT
By feeding physarum polycephalum, I found that many creatures are living by our side. They have different living habits from us, but they will live in their own way. They will have their own social circle and have completely different social rules. From the perspective of the universe, maybe we are also bacteria on the earth. So I want to know what bacteria are around me and what they look like.

INSPIRATION
This is the extra petri dish from the physarum polycephalum test. There are no objects placed in it except the agar base. After two weeks in the same environment as other physarum polycephalum, the magic is that different mold spots grow inside. I think it is very interesting. Many creatures live stubbornly in our unconsciousness. Judging from the appearance of mold, these should not be the same kind of bacteria. So I want to study what bacteria are around us and what these bacteria look like. I want to get acquainted with familiar strangers around us through this experiment.

PROJECT CONCEPT
The air that people inhale every day contains an average of around 50,000 microbial cells, most of which are imperceptible to the naked eye, but which are always with us. The variety of microorganisms varies from region to region, depending on the natural or human environment. For example, some places with more developed production and manufacturing industries may have more dust in the air; wet areas such as lakes and coasts may have more moulds. This is my second year living in Weimar and I want to find out the different microorganisms in the air of the city where I live. I want to collect the microorganisms in the air in different areas of Weimar and map them out so I can learn about some of the microorganisms around me. I plan to sample the microorganisms in the air in different areas around my school as an example. For example parks, streets, student dormitories, libraries etc.

GET SAMPLES
Plan 1
1. Use agar to establish a good culture environment in the Petri dishes.
2. Obtain microbial samples from different areas.
3. Leave the Petri dishes open for the same amount of time and bring them back sealed.
4. Observe the growth of the microorganisms.
5. See where there are the most microbial species.

Plan 2
1. Prepare the culture environment with agar in a Petri dish.
2. Choose different weather and bring the Petri dishes to the same area (choose an area according to plan 1).
3. Leave the Petri dishes open for the same amount of time and bring them back sealed.
4. Observe the growth of the microorganisms.

MAKE MAP
Plan 1
1. Place the container with the agar on the map and divide the different areas.
2. Cover the different areas separately.
3. When the corresponding position is reached, open the cover to allow contact with air.
4. Obtain samples from each of the different areas.

Plan 2
1. Cultivate each area of the microorganism in separate Petri dishes.
2. Select a section to cut.
3. Sew together with the other sections to form a map.

Plan 3
1. Grow the microorganisms in each area in separate Petri dishes.
2. After the microorganisms have grown, air dry the agar substrate.
3. Select a section to be cut.
4. Sew together with the other sections to form a map.

What is lazy eye?
Lazy eye, also called Amblyopia, is a disorder of sight in which the brain fails to process inputs from one eye and over time favors the other eye. It results in decreased vision in an eye that otherwise typically appears normal. Amblyopia is the most common cause of decreased vision in a single eye among children and younger adults.
Feature
- The vision gap between the two eyes is large, so the stereo perception is poor;
- The light they see is weaker than normal people see;
Concept
Amblyopia training is mainly for children under 12 years old, which reminds me of colorful playgrounds. So I want to design a scene that can exercise their color and space perception.
The First Concept: I placed obstacles similar to a maze on the ground. Children can only walk through the obstacles to find the exit, so that they can exercise their sense of three-dimensionality.
The Second Concept: I used planes and lights to construct a space, which people can see different colors in different places.
Sources

PLAN
I want to take my day’s life as an example, take bacterial samples from the surfaces of objects I touch, and then put them in a petri dish for cultivation and observation.

Feature
- The vision gap between the two eyes is large, so the stereo perception is poor;
- The light they see is weaker than normal people see;
- The vision gap between the two eyes is large, so the stereo perception is poor;
- The light they see is weaker than normal people see;
Amblyopia training is mainly for children under 12 years old, which reminds me of colorful playgrounds. So I want to design a scene that can exercise their color and space perception.
The First Concept: I placed obstacles similar to a maze on the ground. Children can only walk through the obstacles to find the exit, so that they can exercise their sense of three-dimensionality.
Final Project
What can we hear if the ears are on the feet? The inspiration for this project came from previous park practices. I found that the park is made up of different sounds. When I walked on different grounds, I could hear different sounds, so I recorded these sounds. When the microphone is close to the ground, the sound of walking can be heard more clearly, which is different from the sound we usually hear
Concept I
People will produce different sounds when they walk on different undergrounds. I want to use the sound sensor to detect and distinguish these different sounds. But during the test, I found that It can only detect the value of the sound but cannot identify different sounds.

Concept II
I want to express the sound produced by the interaction between humans and nature in the form of images, so that people can intuitively see the changes in the sound produced when walking.

———— Midterm Presentation ————

PROTOTYPE
I attached the sound sensor to the clip with a rubber band and then attached it to the shoe. The Arduino is attached to the ankle so that the sound sensor can pick up the sounds made by people walking.

DESIGN
Processing can create circles with different radii depending on the size of the sound.

PROBLEM
- The graphic size is a bit small;
- The generated patterns are irregular;
- Can't collect sound well, easy to be disturbed by the outside world;
- The circle will not disappear gradually;

———— Final Presentation ————

PROTOTYPE
I made a cone out of a piece of plastic and attached it to the microphone so that it could reduce outside noise to a certain extent.

DESIGN
I chose four scenes in Ilm Park, grass, gravel road, wooden bridge and flowing water. The colors representing the four scenes were selected separately, so that people can better feel the different sounds.

Processing can create circles with different radii depending on the size of the sound.
- The graphic size is a bit small;
- The generated patterns are irregular;
- Can't collect sound well, easy to be disturbed by the outside world;
- The circle will not disappear gradually;
PROTOTYPE
I made a cone out of a piece of plastic and attached it to the microphone so that it could reduce outside noise to a certain extent.
A small experiment about Arduino & Processing :)
I divided the square into four parts, and set up a circle with freely variable position parameters in each part, and used LDR to control the size of the circle. I want to study what patterns it can form as the light changes.
Exercise 3
Digital Tilt Sensor
Video link: https://vimeo.com/551549381
Final Project
What can we hear if the ears are on the feet? The inspiration for this project came from previous park practices. I found that the park is made up of different sounds. When I walked on different grounds, I could hear different sounds, so I recorded these sounds. When the microphone is close to the ground, the sound of walking can be heard more clearly, which is different from the sound we usually hear
First Concept
People will produce different sounds when they walk on different undergrounds. I want to use the sound sensor to detect and distinguish these different sounds. But during the test, I found that It can only detect the value of the sound but cannot identify different sounds.

Second Concept
I want to express the sound produced by the interaction between humans and nature in the form of images, so that people can intuitively see the changes in the sound produced when walking.

Plan 1
Problem：
- The graphic size is a bit small
- The generated patterns are irregular
- Can't collect sound well, easy to be disturbed by the outside world
Plan 2
I chose four scenes in Ilm Park, grass, gravel road, wooden bridge and flowing water. The colors representing the four scenes were selected separately, so that people can better feel the different sounds.
Description
Critical VR Lab is a beginner module that offers an Introduction to the Unity game engine. The whole course will be taught online. Participants will be introduced to Unity through video tutorials, accompanied by PDFs and it will be possible to communicate through online meetings and individual consultations.

The course will be taught in two phases:
In phase one participants will be introduced to an overview of the Unity interface and different techniques (Lights, Skyboxes, Prefabs, Timeline, Animation). The learning phase will be accompanied by lectures and discussions that are focused on finding strategies for dealing with the possibilities and challenges of working artistically with Game Engines and 3D technologies. At the end of phase one, students will have created an experience with Unity and documented it on our GMU Wiki-Page. In phase two students are challenged to reflect, discuss, rethink and rework their Unity experience, based on individual research and experienced insights.

The course emphasises on artistic and opposing ways of working with Virtual Reality concepts. It’s aim is to establish individual approaches to VR, a challenging medium which offers artists new possibilities for expression and intercultural communication, especially at times of the Corona Crisis which creates new challenges to the way we interact with each other. Please watch the video for more information.

Amblyopia training is mainly for children under 12 years old, which reminds me of colorful playgrounds. So I want to design a scene that can exercise their color and space perception. In the first part of the game, I used AI to make a black-and-white grid on the ground. The black-and-white grid can interfere with their vision and enhance their perception of colors. I placed obstacles similar to a maze on the ground. Children can only walk through the obstacles to find the exit, so that they can exercise their sense of three-dimensionality. In the second part of the game, I put the perspective in a ball, and the child can observe the movement of objects inside the ball by turning his head.

The first part uses the tutorials given by the teacher, and the second part uses the flipped normal and LookatCamera
