<br style="clear: both">

One hundred years ago, Lazlo Moholy-Nagy described the so-called primitive human as a hunter, a craftsman, a builder and a physician all in one person. According to Moholy-Nagy, the skills of the primitive human were lost in the modern age, contemporaneously to the industrial revolution, when humans became specialized in one or the other craft. Today, having knowledge of a different kind could, for example, help in understanding how technologies or matter interact; and spontaneous ideas could, perhaps, suggest unexpected models for interaction between different technologies or different kinds of matter.

This course is an introduction to the DIY biology, and alongside it, its relation to artistic practices. We will learn how to take care of different organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and protists like Euglena and slime molds. The DIY Bio course also includes practical use of equipment around the biolab, such as the autoclave, microliter pipet, clean bench, centrifuge, PCR machine and electrophoresis chamber.

Along with very practical things, we will talk about maker culture, its ways of work and focusses. While discussing artworks related to biology, we will develop individual ideas, which will finally become our projects. Final projects will be presented in Berlin.
Description
Waiting at traffic lights, shopping online, finding a new partner, baking a cake - noticed or unnoticed, everyone is in contact with algorithms each day.

In the class Algorithmic Art we will focus on graphical algorithms and generative art, to learn how to think like a machine. The programming language Processing offers artists and designers the chance to go beyond predefined and often limiting software and allows them to create their very own tools for 2D or 3D graphics production, interactive installations, data manipulation and more. With a simplified syntax, Processing takes down high entry barriers that are usually associated with programming languages. Simple visual results are possible with just a few lines of code, with an open end to more complex output and rule systems.

We will orient ourselves to the pioneering work of early computer artists (”Algorists”) like Vera Molnar, Manfred Mohr or Frieder Nake and use a pen-plotter (self built in class or a ready-made one) to materialize the algorithms we develop in homeworks or in class. Treated topics and programming basics include: 2D shapes and geometry, variables, arrays, loops, randomness, noise, interaction, animation, functions, object orientation, working with data (image, sound, text),...

Further topics depending on interest:webcam interaction, openCV, working with libraries and API’s, 3D graphics, communication (OSC), projection mapping,…

GENERATIONENKONFLIKT is an installation that asks for the interaction of the visitor and gets a performance as soon as sombody starts the investigation and participation. It can be seen as classic or "analog" appropriation of things aswell as a digital one by using the function of one of the items. It is supposed to be setuped in a medium dark room on the ground and cosists of one torch light, one original hover hood (Schwebehaube in German) by Krups and one Gameboy Color including a Game Boy Camera. Both systems are turned on. What you hear is the hover hood buzzing and some odd 8 bit Nintendo melodies out of the Gameboy Color. Both are attached to the ground, you can not lift it, only the A button works and can get pushed, the torchlight is movable and can get turned on. On the top of the Gameboy the camera lense is looking to the visitor. By using the torch light to look around, the visitor can realise that the screen of the Gameboy shows a changing picture that is affected by the light. By putting the flare on the Gameboy you almost only see a white screen, but due to the delay of the screen you can witness for a second that it must have been showing something different before. Further experiments by the visitor will lead to the perception, that it is not possible to see yourself "live" in the screen like in an (actually very low resolution nostalgic) mirror, because the screen needs light to be able to show something and the lense is too sensitive for the brightness of the torch light. Continously this lense of the 90s is observing the visitor but never shows what it sees when you do not try to look on the screen.

Except you discover the A button. It will allow the visitor to stop (and save) what the camera sees when you don't try to look in the screen with the torch light. E.g. it is possible to put your own head into good light to shoot a well exposed image. You can also use your feet. Nevertheless you are not able to judge live about the quality of the photo everybody is used to with a regular smartphone camera in a selfie situation nowadays. You are forced to rely on your feeling and this oldschool digital technique. Also the visitor will get asked for his will to save the picture. A decision is necessary to conntinue the selfie fun. Answering "yes" results in storing the picture inside the Gameboy without ever being able to see it again, because the B button does not work which is necessary to enter the gallery mode. Luckily afterwards the visitor can continue doing selfies. This is also possible with the answer of "no". The only difference is, that the pictures you shoot are not getting into the hands of the owner of the Gameboy Color.

GENERATIONENKONFLIKT is both a humorous trip to the more obscure inventions of the 80s and 90s and a critical view on internet culture and data privacy today. Visitors might not know all the products used in this installation, because they are too young, too old or just not part of the target group of the product. This creates a certain basis for discourse, investigation and reflection of the past. But besides no matter which generation you belong to the hole installation works as simple metaphor for the modern digital culture and can help to understand certain mechanisms and problems in a very educative and accessible way.

DESCRIPTION<br>
Appropriation in art is the use of pre-existing objects or images with little or no transformation applied to them.
The use of appropriation has played a significant role in the history of the arts (literary, visual, musical and performing arts).
In the visual arts, to appropriate means to properly adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects of human-made visual culture. A notable example are the Readymades of Marcel Duchamp.

But when is appropriation a homage, when is it art and when is it just plain plagiarism? And what are the effects of technology on this ongoing appropriation? Now that boundaries of authenticity and originality are even more blurred, artists (indeed anyone) can recycle and re-upload images, text and audio material more quickly and easily than ever before. Sampling, remixing and mashups proliferate online, and allow people to even adopt a social media profile that appropriates or parodies a well-known persona.

In this course we will look at contemporary artistic strategies of appropriation. We will discuss artforms like Post-Internet art that embraces meme-culture, or music styles like Vapourwave that appropriates 1980s and 1990s styles of mood music.

We will investigate, question and challenge modern and historical concepts related to the topic and create artistic works that can be presented in the form of live performances, video works or installations. The course supports and excercises independent,
self-motivated work. Together, we will create an environment in which students can produce and discuss their own subjects related to the matter.

CRITERIA FOR PASSING<br><br>
In order to successfully participate you will have to develop and document your own project on the GMU Wiki. Also, regularly attend to the sessions and participation is mandatory.

LANGUAGE<br>
Credits: 6 ECTS, 4 SWS<br>
Date: Thursdays, 17:00 - 20:30<br>
Venue: Performance Platform, Digital Bauhaus Lab (Room 001)<br>
First meeting: Thursday, April 12th 2018, 17:00<br>

<br style="clear: both">

The course will be in English, unless all participants are speaking German.

This installation demands the interaction of the visitor and gets a performance as soon as sombody starts the investigation and participation.
This creates a certain basis for discourse, investigation and refelction of the past.
Lecturer: Jörg Brinkmann<br>
Credits: 6 ECTS, 4 SWS<br>
Date: Thursdays, 17:00 - 20:30<br>
Venue: Performance Platform, Digital Bauhaus Lab (Room 001)<br>
First meeting: Thursday, April 12th 2018, 17:00<br>

<br style="clear: both">

The course will be in English, unless all participants are speaking German.
Date: Thursdays, 17:00 - 20:30<br>
Venue: Performance Platform, Digital Bauhaus Lab (Room 001)<br>
First meeting: Thursday, April 12th 2018, 17:00<br>

<br style="clear: both">

The course will be in English, unless all participants are speaking German.
