Using the Fomes fomentarius mushroom, the aim of this project was to make a sculpture showing how the mushroom interacts with nature.

[[File:Illustration.png|thumb|436x436px]]

During the conceptualisation of my ideas, I thought about having the mushroom interact with nature, in particular with animals. However, to avoid the common image of the mushroom being eaten, I wanted the artwork to show the mushroom and the animal living together in peace, and I knew that I wanted a long creature to interact with the mushroom, to wrap itself around it, like a hug, so I decided to use centipedes as inspiration for the animal.

For the mushroom, I opted for a slim shape, avoiding excessive thickness. The inspiration for the mushroom shape came from trees. I needed first a figure representing a simplistic tree. I used plastic containers as my negative moulds, which were disinfected before their use. I startet cultivating mycelium and grew the parts of the tree in the negative moulds. Two of the containers worked perfectly, the third took a lot longer to grow the mushroom, but it also fulfilled its role. After they colonised the space, they where released and placed in the final pose.

One of the containers was used as a base to represent the ground, while the other was placed on top to mimic a simplistic tree. This process allowed the mushroom in shape of the two containers to grow them together.

The end product was more like a stump than a tree, but it was to my liking and I was happy that it worked the way I had imagined. Having achieved the desired shape for the mushroom, I left it to dry. Meanwhile, I crafted a centipede out of clay, which served as my representation for nature. I chose clay because I enjoy working with it and it seemed appropriate to use soil to create the natural component. Making the centipede itself wasn't difficult, but getting it to wrap around the mushroom and stay in place was a challenge - I ended up having to use string and a nail to keep it on the mushroom.
[[File:Png centipede.png|left|thumb]]

The final artwork depicts the centipede tightly wrapped around the mushroom. It is up to the viewer to interpret whether the mushroom and centipede are friends sharing a pleasant moment or if the centipede is imitating a snake, preparing to devour the mushroom as it crawls on top of it. However, what remains unchanged is that the mushroom and centipede are now forever connected.
While in the Biolab, I used gloves to experiment with using them as a mould for the mushroom to grow in. The first attempt was only partially successful, with the mushrooms fully forming around the wrist but not the fingers. To complete the hand, I used another glove to create the fingers and palm. I placed the mushroom pieces next to each other and connected them with wooden sticks, hoping they would fuse together. Although the resulting shape was not a perfect copy of a human hand, the fungus grew over the wood and joined the two parts together to form a complete hand. The experiment was successful. This was a very interesting observation and made me think about healing. While humans can heal minor injuries such as scars, reattaching severed hands is not as simple as it is for mushrooms. Can mushrooms be used for medicinal purposes beyond what is currently known?
To exhibit the hand during the Winterwerkschau, I have corrected its imperfections by putting some bandages on it. Although it is not perfectly shaped, it resembles a human hand quite well, especially considering that it was made using only two gloves. Beyond the exhibition, this mushroom-shaped hand could be used for jewellery modelling or as a decorative storage for items such as rings and bracelets.
In this piece, the mushroom is almost portrayed as having healing properties, as it is able to join two parts of the body together.

The shape of the mushroom was created by using plastic moulds, filling them with the fungi and letting the mushroom grow inside of them. The mushroom needed a lot of time - and moisture, but in the end the desired shape was created.
