'''vr-tionship // [re]imagination of a dating-game using manipulated recordings from vr-chat'''

''“In this environment, the visual replaces the tactile as the primary modality of sensual transcendence and release from our ever-narrowing boundaries of acceptable social conduct. The digital self becomes both performer and audience in a communal release of the Dionysian id.” ''[1]

The purpose of this project is to be used as a starting experiment for my upcoming thesis on the topic of desire and space. Additionally, it presents us with an experience of creating/nourishing a connection without the physical body, in a space absent from many laws and restrictions that govern our physical world.

The idea was to do a research from two different points – one being the experience of searching for a date in the ‘big’ world of vr-chat, approaching, dealing with your own shyness, creating new desires and finally getting to know somebody completely new; and the other one being the experience of taking an established connection/relationship and displacing it inside the new virtual space.

'''the new // vr-tionship: a dating game'''

'''vimeo link:''' https://vimeo.com/816281092

'''after-thoughts:''' What I realized was that for me it didn’t matter that I was in a space where I could be anything, anyone and in a way anonymous – I was still super shy! I really hated (like I do in my physical life) the idea of approaching someone and asking them on a date. It is interesting to see, however, that there were many people who didn’t really care what they were saying or doing. From a guy who was just going around and singing on top of his lungs to the guy who was saying some really awful and some really illegal stuff. The question is at the end – how much of that is it just part of their every-day personality? Do they hide it, and then feel more free to express it inside vr-chat, or are they just the same outside? How much does virtual space free us? Does it change us?

Coming back to topic of desire - despite the absence of the real human body, I did feel pulled toward certain avatars and people. It seems that just like wearing certain clothes, or sporting a different hairstyle, it does speak a lot about a person behind the chosen avatar!

Finally, during the ‘mini-game’ I went on multiple speed-dates and asked my dates about the connections they created in vr-chat. They all confirmed that they had valuable relationships inside the virtual space, or that they believe in friendships created there.

the new // process

I decided to reuse an old character that I created using '''Gravity Sketch''' during my first semester. '''The first step''' was to edit it in '''Blender''' so it is as less complex and clean for the purpose of meeting the standards for vr-chat avatars:

In '''the second step''' I used '''MIXAMO''' for the purpose of quickly and automatically rigging the character:

Finally I used '''UNITY''' to create and upload the avatar to Vr-Chat:

I recorded my time inside vr-chat using '''Xbox Game Bar''' (there are other possible methods) and edited the videos inside '''Premiere Pro''':

Considering that I want to work on a ‘dating-game’ for my thesis project I decided to manipulate the recordings from Vr-chat using '''Photoshop''' and Premiere Pro to create a kind of a ‘proposal’ for a new type of a dating game.

'''Photoshop''' was used to create an illusion of '''UI elements''':

Finally, I wanted to put some 8-bit background music: [https://www.fesliyanstudios.com/royalty-free-music/download/a-bit-of-hope/565 https://www.fesliyanstudios.com/royalty-free-music/download/a-bit-of-hope/565]

'''Check out 8-bit girlfriend''': [https://www.mobygames.com/game/48082/8-bit-girlfriend/ https://www.mobygames.com/game/48082/8-bit-girlfriend/]

'''the old // going on a date with a friend inside vr'''

'''vimeo link:''' https://vimeo.com/816298545

'''after-thoughts: '''It was really awkward, however, supper fun! All the glitches, all that was not working well just entertained us even more! It’s also interesting that for us the most fascinating thing was to find places where we could do stuff we can do in physical space (like eating and playing pool), instead of trying to do things we can’t do outside virtual world.

Another point is that in vr-chat it feels more public to go on a date then in real world, and inside, many more people interacted with us and engaged in what we were doing. Usually, in physical space people try to mind their own business and are afraid to interact.

Finally, I think physical touch is definitely lacking, but beside it also smell and feeling the air and temperature. It created a certain distance between what we were doing and where we actually were – and that is together in a room!

''<nowiki>*additional video of us bumping into each other inside a small room with vr glasses coming soon</nowiki>''

''<nowiki>**</nowiki>this project is ongoing''

First meeting: 21.10.22, 15:15

==Description==

It’s exciting that interactive media such as the Internet creates new social spaces that give us the opportunity to validate identity aspects communicatively, to design them interactively and to redesign them. In these spaces, aspects of identity can be exemplified, tested, simulated, practised and made public. Through communication via the Internet, processes of transmediation also take place that can help to gain a better understanding of our present time.

Digital media technologies now permeate all areas of life: They transform the cultural and creative sector and the economic system as well as politics, science, civil society and everyday practices.

That's why artistic work shouldn't be used as an observation of the media, but as an examination of digital cultures. Digital cultures encompass both the technological conditions and artifacts as well as the systems and processes of perception, meaning and communication.

Strolling through the digital spaces of the Internet, in particular milieu-specific socialization spaces of visual practices, means dealing with the everyday behavior on social media platforms with an observant and analytical consciousness. The concept of strolling, which Walter Benjamin introduced in the 20th century using the example of Parisian boulevard life, can also be transferred to the digital world. With that theory in mind, we will focus on the conditions of identity formation and communication of belonging in various milieus of the Internet.

The Internet no longer exists as a niche of an alternative or separated world, but has intrinsically grown together with the real living and cultural spaces of our society via the omnipresence of stationary and mobile devices.
What transformation processes occur when social interaction online is transferred into an immersive virtual space?

VRChat is a Free to play Massively Multipayer Online Game and allows players to use 3D avatars to interact with other players in a virtual world. In contrast to open-world games such as Second Life or Minecraft, VRChat offers the possibility to experience immersive spatial impressions via VR interfaces and to interact with each other through body movements and gestures.

In our blockmodule workshop we will explore this socialization space as a flâneur and create our own avatars and places of encounter through which we can interact with other users in the virtual world.

Back in High School I wrote a short story from a black '''cat’s point of view'''. She was living with an artist stuck in a heavy art block. This cat’s human completely forgot about his pet and let it starve. Miserable creature would leave through the window, be kicked by crowds of humans on the street, yelled at by the butcher and finally would end up in an alley full of dogs. There she would barely make it, and drag her bloody and ruined body back on the window of hers human apartment. The gory sight of his cat, would bring the artist out of his '''art block''' and he would shout his cat’s name in joy. Cat is once again happy, not because she is slowly healing, but because '''she is finally noticed'''. The cat heals and the painting is finished. Once again, artist doesn’t look at his cat. The cat leaves through the window, this time searching for the dogs.

'''The loop''' is present in both the story and the ‘game’.

I had many ideas regarding this story. From turning it into a stop-motion animation to making a short live-action film. I knew different types of used media would transform my story, by complying with the constraints and rules that exist within.

At the end, I have chosen '''Unity Engine'''. I let the story[game] creation guide my learning process and exploration inside the engine. The story influenced what I learned, yet, my own limits and engine’ possibilities shaped the story into this ‘narrative game’.

[[Image:KataImage1.png|x428px]][[Image:KataImage4.png|x428px]][[Image:KataImage2.png|x428px]]

'''Critical VR Lab I''' is a beginner module that offers an Introduction to the Unity game engine. The whole course will be taught in the Digital Bauhaus Lab and online. Participants will be introduced to Unity through video tutorials, accompanied by PDFs and it will be possible to communicate through online meetings and individual consultations.

'''The course will be taught in two phases:'''
In phase one participants will be introduced to an overview of the Unity interface and different techniques (Lights, Skyboxes, Prefabs, Timeline, Animation). The learning phase will be accompanied by lectures and discussions that are focused on finding strategies for dealing with the possibilities and challenges of working artistically with Game Engines and VR technologies. At the end of phase one, students will have created an experience with Unity and documented it on our GMU Wiki-Page. In phase two students are challenged to reflect, discuss, rethink and rework their Unity experience, based on individual research and experienced insights.
The course emphasises on artistic and opposing ways of working with Virtual Reality concepts. It’s aim is to establish individual approaches to VR, a challenging medium which offers artists new possibilities for expression and intercultural communication, especially at times of the Corona Crisis which creates new challenges to the way we interact with each other.

==Recommended Requirements==
No previous knowledge of Unity or other 3D software is needed, but applicants should have access to the Internet, a Computer and Headphones.
