Happy Birthday
I made a supercut out of musicvideos of the Top10-SingleCharts from my birthday. The scenes comprise footage in which several instruments are "showcased" visually. I assumed that those scenes would indicate important moments of the referenced composition, like "hooks", solos or other instrumental parts. The scenes and corresponding musical snippets are located at the exact same time where they occur in their originals. Thus the supercut yields a "meta song".

In order to achieve this I trained the yolov5-object-detection-algorithm with a custom dataset of images of Guitars, Drums, Keyboards, Microphones and Saxophones using fifty one and open images
Graphs displaying the training development on training and validation data set over 40 epochs. The training took about 6 hours.

I cleaned and prepared the resulting detection data using Pandas.

exemplary cleaned and prepared detection data set

Finally I created a TouchDesigner-patch doing the cutting based on the detection data:

excerpt of TouchDesigner-patch

There are many ways to improve the project:
First, the training should be repeated using more labeled images. Until now I used about 1000 images per object class. Even more important would be to introduce background data without any labeled objects to the training data set. The current model detects objects where in fact aren't any. Especially "musical keyboard" responses to a lot of nonsense. In general a deeper understanding of what it is that I was actually doing would be helpful.
Second, The data preperation and cleaning could be done more meticulously. In order to simplify the process I ignored cases in which more than one object per frame was detected. I would need to figure out how to deal with a) different classes are detected in one frame and b) several instances of the same object are detected in the same frame.
Third, The cutting and editing in TouchDesigner was provisional. Maybe I should consider achieving the same using ffmpeg or something similar, since it is not really necessary to operate in realtime.
Fourth, I should try to increase the amount of videos from top10 to maybe top100 to investigate how the effect of it changes. The current version contains long breaks and "wrong" scenes (which don't contain any instrument) which makes it hard to even understand the supertcut approach at all.
Fifth, I should reconsider my choice of detection classes. Or more in general substantiate the motivation of my supercut. Which are typical tropes and ideological references in music videos of 1990 that I want to draw the viewer/listener attention to?
Sixth, are there other ways of contextualizing the supercut like composition or installation?
Description
Micro-editing is a technique of rearranging tiny fragments of media to form a new work. In the context of music, microhouse is a subgenre of house which employs this technique. Akufen's Deck the House from 2002 may serve as an example. In the context of experimental film, Martin Arnold compiled his 1989 montage “Pièce Touchée” entirely from found-footage by copying frames in a specific order with an optical printer, emphasizing and amplifying gestures from the original movie. Steina Vasulka, Granular Synthesis and many other artists followed in exploring an aesthetic of deconstruction and reassembly of the timeline in moving images. In pop culture this “audiovisual cut-up” was used to expand the visual language of music clips and to have the audiences of live performances spellbound. Micro-edits are used in different contexts ranging from media art, experimental film-making to music clips and advertising.
Digital video has become an almost infinite source of to-be-found-footage which is accessible to anyone, anytime through platforms like YouTube, which are essentially databases for moving images of almost any kind. They enabled pop culture phenomenons like supercuts: compilations of short shots of the same action, or YouTube Poop mashups of videos with a comical and at times immature humour: Today, meta information, close captions, machine learning analysis and music information retrieval can provide the means to generate automated edits. Real-time reassembly of media fragments based on databases, feature extraction or meta-information has become entirely feasible. In the class Computer's Cut — Generative Video Editing we will learn to let algorithms cut and edit.
Venue: Online Seminar
First Date: Thursday, 05.11.2020, 15:30

Description
Critical VR Lab I – Unity Introduction is a beginner module that offers an Introduction to the Unity game engine. The whole course will be taught online. Participants will be introduced to Unity through video tutorials, accompanied by PDFs and it will be possible to communicate through online meetings and individual consultations.

The course will be taught in two phases:
In phase one participants will be introduced to an overview of the Unity interface and different techniques (Lights, Skyboxes, Prefabs, Timeline, Animation). The learning phase will be accompanied by lectures and discussions that are focused on finding strategies for dealing with the possibilities and challenges of working artistically with Game Engines and VR technologies. At the end of phase one, students will have created an experience with Unity and documented it on our GMU Wiki-Page. In phase two students are challenged to reflect, discuss, rethink and rework their Unity experience, based on individual research and experienced insights.

The course emphasises on artistic and opposing ways of working with Virtual Reality concepts. It’s aim is to establish individual approaches to VR, a challenging medium which offers artists new possibilities for expression and intercultural communication, especially at times of the Corona Crisis which creates new challenges to the way we interact with each other. Please watch the video for more information.

Recommended Requirements
No previous knowledge of Unity or other 3D software is needed, but applicants should have access to the Internet, a Computer and Headphones.

Criteria for passing
In order to successfully participate you will have to develop and document your own project on the GMU Wiki. Also, complete the exercises and comply with the submission deadlines
