Venue: Online Seminar
First Date: Thursday, 15.04.2021, 15:15

==Description==
Critical VR Lab is a beginner module that offers an Introduction to the Unity game engine. The whole course will be taught online. Participants will be introduced to Unity through video tutorials, accompanied by PDFs and it will be possible to communicate through online meetings and individual consultations.

'''The course will be taught in two phases:'''
In phase one participants will be introduced to an overview of the Unity interface and different techniques (Lights, Skyboxes, Prefabs, Timeline, Animation). The learning phase will be accompanied by lectures and discussions that are focused on finding strategies for dealing with the possibilities and challenges of working artistically with Game Engines and 3D technologies. At the end of phase one, students will have created an experience with Unity and documented it on our GMU Wiki-Page. In phase two students are challenged to reflect, discuss, rethink and rework their Unity experience, based on individual research and experienced insights.

The course emphasises on artistic and opposing ways of working with Virtual Reality concepts. It’s aim is to establish individual approaches to VR, a challenging medium which offers artists new possibilities for expression and intercultural communication, especially at times of the Corona Crisis which creates new challenges to the way we interact with each other. Please watch the video for more information.

FINAL PROJECT

''“Life of Things”

The idea of the project was to further investigate the relationship between humans and the space/elements surrounding them. The first thoughts went on how the built environment influences our behavior and interactions - how a square determines the way we communicate and interact with one another, how the way in which we place chairs around a table really influence the social dynamics and interactions. These are themes which I feel very close to and I always find fascinating to investigate.

For this semester project I wanted to shift perspective - to investigate how objects react to our presence. Of course, soft objects do physically react to our body - if only we think about a pillow or a sofa - but rigid objects don’t. I find it fascinating, because human presence has an enormous impact on the planet and most of it is not directly visible in our everyday life.

As I tried to visualize this idea, I firstly did some experiments with clay, putting it around everyday objects and then shaping it with the weight of my hands. The idea was to really show how objects would look like if they physically reacted to human presence. I found this experiment interesting because it made me help visualize the idea better.

Finally, I decided to create visualizations and scenarios digitally. I shaped some basic elements - cubes, toruses, spheres - and I deformed/sculpted them with the program “Blender”. I then uploaded them to the game engine “Unity”, through which I created five different scenarios which helped me visualize the idea. In these scenarios I played with the simple shapes I mentioned and the elements representing humans: hands and bodies.
In the animation, when the human factor is in physical contact with the shapes, these become corroded. When not, they stay intact. Sometimes it’s tricky, because it seems like the hands do touch the shapes, but it is only a shadow game.

Lastly, I recorded parts of the scenes and combined them together in a video. In the subtitles you can read some short reflections about the idea of coexistance between humans and the environment, and how we tend to search for an equilibrium, both within ourselves and with the sorroundings - but this can become extremely complex.
I decided not to include a soundtrack to the animation, in order to keep the scenario as metaphysical as possible, I only included a few sounds to evoke the movement of the elements.
MIDTERM PRESENTATION

My project consists of creating different scenarios/ metaphysical spaces to investigate the relationship between architecture and its users. The main idea is to use architecture and architectural elements as a research tool more than a production of architectural artifacts.

My current experiments are very inspired by the work of Andreas Angelidakis and the group OMA x AMO.
My current experiments are very inspired by the work of Andreas Angelidakis and the group OMA x AMO.

For this semester project I wanted to shift perspective - and to try and imagine this idea in reverse: how do objects react to our presence.

Finally, I went back to creating visualizations and scenarios digitally. I shaped some basic elements - cubes, toruses, spheres - and I deformed/sculpted them with the program “Blender”. I then transferred them to the game engine “Unity”, through which I created five different scenarios which helped me shape the idea. In these scenarios I played with the simple elements and with the element of hands/humans. When the hands/humans are in contact with the shapes, these become corroded. When not, they stay intact. Sometimes it’s tricky, because it seems like the hands do touch the shapes, but this occurs only in the shadows. I also decided not to play music or sounds in order to create a metaphysical environment.''

For this semester project I wanted to shift perspective - and to try and imagine this idea in reverse: how do objects react to our presence.

For this semester project I wanted to shift perspective - and to try and imagine this idea in reverse: how do objects react to our presence.

For this semester project I wanted to shift perspective - and to try and imagine this idea in reverse: how do objects react to our presence.

For this semester project I wanted to shift perspective - and to try and imagine this idea in reverse: how do objects react to our presence.

For this semester project I wanted to shift perspective - and to try and imagine this idea in reverse: how do objects react to our presence.

==Description==
'''Critical VR Lab II – Lab Work''' will give participants the possibility to work in the Digital Bauhaus Lab, after receiving an introduction to the Corona hygiene regulations.
Groups of maximal two students can choose between three time slots and work individually on two VR systems (HTC Vive + HighSpeed PC). Therefore, it will be possible for six students to work in the Digital Bauhaus Lab every week and with maximal 12 participants each student will be able to work in the Lab every second week. It will also be possible for participants to borrow one of five OculusGO VR glasses as well as one of three Ricoh Theta 360 cameras and use them to work on projects outside of the Digital Bauhaus Lab.
