The synthetic biology supermarket will offer a range of about 30 consumer products, that employ the means of synthetic biology.<br>
The supermarkets product range will cover already available goods, products that are implied by iGEM projects of previous years and items developed by tour Team. The latter will be the majority of the offered products.

Products
The synthetic biology supermarket will offer a range of about 30 consumer products, that employ the means of synthetic biology.<br>
The supermarkets product range will cover already available goods, products that are implied by iGEM projects of previous years and items developed by tour Team. The latter will be the majority of the offered products.
All products offered in the synthetic biology supermarket will have one thing in common: A clear relation to synthetic biology.<br>
These Products will be represented by the use of images, videos and textual product descriptions. The descriptions are hereby of great importance, as they -complimentary to introducing the products usage and features- will outline the role of synthetic biology in each product. This shall stimulate engagement with synthetic biology by communicating its concepts and giving information about its methods and possibilities and therefor covers one of the synthetic biology supermarket projects main intentions.<br>
The product range shall be continiously developed after the iGEM competition 2010 and should then also include product(concept)s developed by others. This could be iGEM teams, scientists, artists, designers or others involved in synthetic biology. This is an interesting and important aspect of our project. Especially with regard to creating an active platform that reaches out beyond the igem 2010 competition.
English description
Mobile networks and wireless telecommunications technologies are inherently spatial at the scale of landscape and infrastructure. Important questions about the relationship of landscape and subjectivity - our very sense of place in the world - emerge with the rise of this new "network landscape" condition. Artists and designers working in this domain have begun to design and represent this condition in projects that range from networked street performance and activist projects, to collaborative cartography, situated ethnography, and pervasive games. This workshop in locative media will introduce participants to basic concepts in the technical, aesthetic and compositional aspects of creating GPS-based interactive installations using iPaq devices and the freeware mScape. The workshop is designed to address a spectrum of participants from novice to expert. Space is limited (25).
The participants should plan to create some sound files in advance - sound capture or creation will not be covered during the workshop as there isn't enough time, but participants must bring their own sounds to work with or share sound files with one another. They can also use stock sound downloaded from the internet, or sound from other projects, of course. However, it is best if the group agrees on a general area to work with - some place in close proximity to the building in which the workshop will take place so that it's easy to access in the short time frame of the workshop. It can be a rather large area, around 1 x 1 kilometers, but not much larger since it takes lots of time to compile, walk / test iterations and collectively experience the final compositions.
Synthetic Biology will ubiquitously change our world. In order to explain what that means from my point of view, I will compare this to Greek drama. With their philosophy, politics and above all their art, the Greeks radically changed their world. Above all was the roll of Greek drama carrying this antique high culture out of an era of illiteracy to a society of writing with which it was put in the position zu communicate over time and space. Synthetic biology is currently making its first step towards a firm place in our worldview with which likewise will begin a new era of scientific use of our environment.
Sonification means the turning into sound of specific events, typical examples for sonifying devices are the sonar and the Geiger counter—with both devices it is only an indication of an event, but possesing no characteristics of the event itself. Through the employment of bacteria in a video-tracked petridish as the foundation of a sound installation, a completely other form of composition arises in which the composer no longer takes over the rules of mathematics and the interdependencies create a multiplicity of themselves, but the setup, i.e., the orchestra, plays the composition through the rules of nature, which means the processuality is carried from a theoretical field to a performative one. Nature follows its own rules and is only manipulated, or rather changed, in terms of its own framework. With this one can understand this art project also as a kind of translation of scientific work within the field of synthetic biology.
The petri dish as an enclosed living environment for the bacteria serves as a metaphor similar to the Greek amphitheater—for the life and death of our planet earth. Sonification is the chosen means in order to transport the abstract microbiological process of which people easily access a level of abstraction.

Metallische Fäden an ihren Enden erzeugen elektromagnetische Felder.

Uncle Walt's Shitpie - Georgios Koumanidis

Die erste Zone würde alle spezielle Show zeigen.

Art goes on in your head. If you said something interesting, that might be a title for a work of art and I'd write it down. Art comes from everywhere. It's your response to your surroundings. There are on-going ideas I've been working out for years, like how to make a rainbow in a gallery. I've always got a massive list of titles, of ideas for shows, and of works without titles.
Damien Hirst

I sort of slip back in time instead of forward, I think it’s because I’m overwhelmed and confused by the present. Nothing bad about the future, just that I only know about the past... For quite a while now, I’ve been painting where ever I can see what I want to paint. John Cooper

TIME WAS BY FAR THE MOST ARTIFICIAL OF ALL OUR INVENTIONS, AND IN BEING BOUND TO THE PLANET TURNING ON ITS OWN AXIS WAS NO LESS ARBITRARY THAN WOULD BE, SAY, A CALCULATION BASED ON THE GROWTH OF TREES OR THE DURATION REQUIRED FOR A PIECE OF LIMESTONE TO DISINTEGRATE... IN ORDER TO RECKON TIME WE HAVE TO DEVISE AN IMAGINARY, AVERAGE SUN... -austerlitz

My work this semester has been focused on reviewing my methods of "looking" and on figuring out how to slow down and come to a methodology of synaesthetic "watching". I have experimented with HD video and self-made camera mounting devices and made research on the topic of time/chronology and experimental film approaches.

As a final semester project I am presenting a 2min40sec, single channel HD video work entitled "missing looking 1: taubach". The work includes macro perspective HD video recorded outdoors, short audio-feedback sounds recorded and edited with the video and flickering black spaces, reminiscent of blinking, the instability of perception and gaps between the senses. The video uses a single image sequence, cut intuitively using a concrete poetic technique of loose categorization and subsequent remixing. The video recording is treated as raw material for the exercise of sculpting to look for a new awareness.

The video is without a linear narrative. It is focused on textural detail to the pont of abstraction and does not follow a traditional omnipresent structure of giving and taking. No subject is revealed, nor is it intentionally hidden.

The goal of my work this semester was on coming to a poetic and intuitive way of approaching my artistic practice. Clearly influenced by experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage and approaching aesthetic experienced as being linked to human physicality as much as psychology I am influenced by works which attempt to bring a viewer near to the realization of their own human existence. Such as the experience of Joseph Beuys' felt stacks pulling the sound from the ears of every nearby viewer and colour theory as explained by eye physicality by Itten and my former professor John Cooper, I am exploring through the mediums of video and recorded sound to create a super-sensory experience.

While my work from this semester involves a number of exploratory technical works, on the whole, I am interested in exploring time-related breaks between the senses of sight and hearing.

I believe there is a sensory gap when one moves in perception between the spaces of micro and macro. In this instance, time and sound are stretched, as the body adjusts to receiving intense macro detail. A journey/passage from one time/space environment to another is an overwhelming experience, a momentary loss of one's self into an aesthetic space, which may be considered cathartic.

It is my ultimate goal to turn this phenomena into a public experience, in a future large-scale AV performance.

concept
I'm interested in exploring time-related breaks between the senses of sight and hearing.

In my work I wish to turn this phenomena into a public experience. It is my goal to produce the conditions, in a performance/screening setting for the audience to feel lost in the aesthetic space between micro and macro. I will use HD video images in micro and macro visions and unique techniques for recording motion. In the final work I will move rapidly between different image positions and search to bring and then hold the audience into a hyper-sensory experience.

I will use a subtle sound system for the work, in the tradition of granular synthesis which imply motion and change, but remain abstract.

The imagery will be taken from nature, outdoors and animals in very high resolution.

image
process
Collaborators please!~~ any feedback is more than welcome!<br>

I must think about the image processing; sound and also the screening format (single channel or multiple monitors; screening/performance setup or installation; large or small)

I'm undecided how I want to proceed technically. As described above, I have the idea to create a certain atmosphere for viewers, to move then into a perception gap. I have some stock footage or HD video, chopped into very small clips and I would like to begin by inserting this into a large amount of different softwares (or hardwares) to see what effects can be achieved.<br>

* if anyone is intested, I would really love to make a workshop session where different epople from the course take this footage and stick it into the different processing or editing tools they are familiar with, to see differents perceptions of the moving images I have.<br>
* is this something we could do together in class for an hour or so? Is anyone interested? Should we set-up an additional session for it?<br>
* possible tools to check out: different PD patches, different editing softwares and filters, trying to watch it on different projectors, multiple monitors, self-made patches, specialized slow and fast motion HD plugins... I'm really open at this stage to try the footage out in any setting.

the keyword for this projekt is "prosody", that means the science about rhythm, stress and intonation of speech. I'll try to manipulate any given speech with a specific overlay to generate a new meaning or a strange combination of content and meaning e.g. reading the telephonbook like a holy speech and so on. The "overlayed" "structure" is given by the performer and the imput will be live. I want to realize this with a pd patch that i have to write or build till the semester. The background is a theorie that any kind of speech independent from the cultural background could be identified by anybody because of the intonation, the speech, the pitch (political, religious, news, sport, and so on) - this instrument could be used as a "translater" of the cultural melody of the voice or just to play with different meaning. It is the other way around how an anchorman works, he is trying to speak any typ of news in any combination more or less neutral - this is more difficult than it sounds.
A panty hose dances to the music.

For instance, like visualizer. In the visualizer, digital images follow the music. And in the dancerizer, the motions follow the music.

principle :
A panty hose has two strings on either side of its upper part. These Strings are connected to the motors. When user selects and starts the music, then software analyzes the music and send the bit's signal to the motors. A panty hose dances some patterns of motion to the music.

Theory
Viewing Live AV as a platform for experimentation, my live sets explore the inscription of visual culture in time. By utilizing custom algorithms and animation software and without the use of prerecorded video or still footage, these works result in a hyperreal fluidity of visual mutations, ranging from tightly synchronized passages, to moments of free improvisation. Developing the concepts of digital as organism and software as ecosystem, my sets create a focused, personal aesthetic, finding commonalities in tone, texture and movement between audio and visual elements.

Practice
I have been invited to perform Live Visuals with vidderna, at ROJO/NOVA, a multimedia event this July in Sao Paulo, Brazil. We will play a 1 hour show together at an event alongside other AV acts.

Technically I am building a visual instrument in Touch Designer, . For the performance with vidderna, I plan to add a HD multi-movie stream compositing system(with alpha), a 3D timeline, and build/consolidate some GLSL shaders into 2D filters I can use in the compositing system.

I will also create new artwork specifically for this performance.

Matthias Breuer: Deconstructing the truth
Besides doing some research and experimenting I am trying to do one smaller project.

The project focuses on the truth and reality of the images we see. Taking any kind of video source as input, the stream's audio channel is continously played back. The corresponding frame is calculated from similarity to all previous frames. The most similar frame will be displayed. Each new frame is then placed in a database for comparison with forthcoming frames. This creates a steadily growing and learning mass which&mdash;after some time&mdash;can replace reality with frames from the past. At that point no clear distinction between reality and fiction can be made anymore.

Similarity between frames depend on an amount of chosen factors. Most commmon are histogram, structure etc. but always depend on the features one sees as important in an image. It's not important to match the look of a frame as close as possible but to match a frame in a given set of interests.

Working with stories concerning certain sexual experiences where I hope to transform explicit stories (not sexually explicit per se, but explicit in terms of talking about a definite sequence of events) into more elusive or meditative. I hope to echieve this through the editing and piecing of the stories. I have some stories collected already. I normally work with appropriated images, collecting and arranging still photos and text. With a few exceptions, I have never worked in appropriated moving images, and have very little experience in working with audio but would like to work in seeing what I can do with stretching my work of appropriation with the added element of time.
Theme: rwd 1989 / fwd 1989
Background
1989 is a memoriable year for German and Chinese

4 June, 1989 - Tiannmen Square Massacre in China. People in Macau and Hong Kong are still fighting for justice for those who killed,
every year after 1989, candle lights memorial ceremonies are hold. While in China, no one is allowed to talk about it.

9 November, 1989 - Fall of the Berlin Wall. The Wall was not entirely demolished on that date, so as the system is still remained in
some parts of Eastern Germany and no one would talk about it.
Concept
rwd 1989 highlights the regression of democracy and human rights in China, beginning in May that the Chinese students in
Beijing started a protest to urge reforms in government and yet turned out to be a massacre. And till now, only Macau and Hong Kong
can still have the freedom to fight for justice. After the handovers, however, it becomes obvious that the SARs government are trying
to avoid bringing up this issue.

fwd 1989 highlights the progression after the reunion brings social and economic crises to Eastern Germany. The society and the people
needed time to adapt to the capitalist West. Such sudden changes made people did not harmonize with the old system that the people got
used to.
Execution
4 June massacre images shown in linear direction and 9 November of the fall of Berlin Wall shown backwards, and images stop to the
point they meet.
Images are projected on the windows of a building
Thoughts
Those are two rather rough concepts waiting for more detail work.

* a video-controlling musical instrument, a digital flute
* ldrs controlling pitch/color channels or triggering specific scenes (there's an infinite number of possibilities actually)
* a microphone manipulating loudness/brightness/speed of the video or so

I think I will stick with the instrument-idea, starting with some Arduino-/electronics-/sensor- experiments and some research on how a real flute actually works, how the sound is produced and what the possibilities to control those sounds are. The mapping in pd will probably be the most tricky part, so I will just work on that simultaneously.

Beschreibung

I plan to bring attention to the senseless and disgusting way in which animals have been mistreated through space programs globally. The idea is to create a whole series of propaganda that centres around a certain country that plans to send an elephant into space in February 2012 for scientific purposes.'They' want to find out the results of how fast an elephant can blink its eye in real time zero gravity, as well as balance a ball on its trunk and whether the skin from an elephant can retain moisture... These are just some of the really important tests that will be conducted, in order to make scientific and technological advances in science, that in turn - will help humans... I want to create a Wiklipedia page, as well as have a mock protest in Markt platz, put articles in news papers, do drawings and paintings etc etc... People should not be able to tell if it is real or a joke: After-all, it could be really happening - The end result could be a book or small exhibition? - Is anyone interested in joining my project? I would be happy if anyone was... Or will it be just me and the elephant?
The Radiostar

Since more than 100 years humankind uses technology for broardcasting content and for some physics reasons nearly 80% of that signals are just "lost" in space. That means the nearby outer space ( 100 ly orbit) is in a way a kind of radioarchive or a cultural documentation of hunmankinds ability to send signals with several technologies. I'm focused on the frequency band of ultra short wave radio signals. To explain this cosmic-international radioarchive, I want to create a navigationplan to "travel" through that archive. the installation will be a (selfmade) telescopebody (no tech inside) that can be moved in different directions to zoom into a model of that "radiohalo". The room, where the telescope will be placed, is prepaired with some small radiotransmitters (selfmade) to symbolize where some particularly broadcasts are "waving" in outer space. Inside that telescopebody will be some, i think maybe three, radioreceivers to get in contact with the transmitters and by moving that telescopebody the recipient can adjust the programm that sounds in the body of the telescope. (sorry for my bad english)

I will construct a specialized cart for holding and stabilising the camera and a harness for attaching this cart to a horse. The horse will be instructed to walk in a straight line along a road in the countryside. The cart will be made of wood, well oiled.

The music for the video will be an adaptation of Grace Slick's 1980 solo song Dreams. VOYAGEO consists of projections of satellite pictures on to the human body. These pictures are not about act photography, but about the recognition of earth and the human body. Mankind has a high selfconfidence about itself and its reign on earth but still is not really selfaware. We are trying to produce thus selfconsciousness by showing not the beauty showed in today's media. We want to have a look on the everyday reality of body and earth.
We are going to create a Website that acts as "Advent Calendar", so that every day from the 1st of December until the 24th of December visitors can discover a picture there. We want to take them on a 24-day-long journey in order to get greater attention for this theme.

This is a preview on our online gallery:

Our concept bases upon two topics: The Innovation of Satellite Images & the Construction of the Human Body in the Media.

Our main focus is on the fascination of satellite images. Here are some interesting links to develop:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raumfahrt#Meilensteine_der_Raumfahrt

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kartographie#Qualit.C3.A4tsmerkmale_kartografischer_Produkte

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellitenfotografie

The satellite pictures offer a special perspective on the earth:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH8UMbzgIAE

In concern to the photography of Human Bodies we especially dicussed the Individuality of everybody's external appearance. This is related to the individual appearance of the earth on satellite images.
People seem to be physically perfect in the modern media. But we know that is mostly manipulated:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fotomanipulation

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFPGa0pKyTg

So what is physical individuality?

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Individualit%C3%A4t

Be curious, in a few days you can find more answers & watch new perspectives on www.voyageo.de!
<u>The Feeling of Infinity ∞ </u>

The world of science means numbers, calculations, effects and explanations.
The universe is a place to explore. Also here you find mathematics and calculations, time and space.
When everything is in order and part of the human knowledge - you get the feeling of "security".
The moon is turning with a certain speed around the Earth, the Earth - which has a certain mass and and an age is turning around the sun, which of course has a certain temperature and so on... .
But what about things you can not explain? To be more precisely - questions which occur to our mind like:
What is behind the universe and where is it all ending? Infinity.

The mainidea of the project is to find an installation, which creates this certain feeling.

O God, I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself king of infinite space...
bookproject – „space is my place“ - aren‘t we all aliens?
for me space is in general is a very undefined place. as i think it encourage everybody to use their whole imagination and creativity
i will use this unknown area to create my own place, figures and spacy environments. i am going to make an illustrated book for
children which consists of these imaginary protagonists and will lead them to an abstract way of creating their own playground.
the book will give them the opportunity to reconstruct the creatures by themselfs and learn how to create their own „alians“.
when the child is interacting with the object playing a part in the story its more easy for them to get a connection between
the actual sense of making up something in addition to the creative process. they can use the „alians“ they build before to make
up further stories and play them within their family. so in the end their will be a book which provides a intersocial way of reading, listening, building and a wide range of playing effects on little children as much as on adults. it is „talking“ to different
senses and invites everybody to join who loves to see the world and espacially the space more open minded and in a creativly way
of thinking about „outhere“.
Creating a self-playing instrument
We want to create a self-playing instrument that uses a map of stars for creating soundscapes. The user should be able to change the snippet of the map, draw and edit zodiac signs and start and stop sounds.

When a star is clicked, it makes a noise and a shockwave comes up. It evolves through the space and activates other stars and items on its way which also make sounds and send new shockwaves. So the application doesn't need any user input to go on but the user can take influence on the continuity.

If a zodiac sign gets activated all linked stars will start making tones at the same time.

Two methods: Samples or MIDI
At the moment there are two techniques for realizing this idea:

# We render samples of the instruments and embed them in our application. It's easier to develop but very limited in functionality. The application could be distributed via web because no special hard- or software is needed.
# We send MIDI events to an external software synthesizer which will create the sounds. This requires a powerful machine and much research but is more powerful in the aspect of flexibility and creativity. The application needs some additional software to be running in the background so it won't be capable to be distributed as out-of-the-box experience.

Have some fun with Flash and MIDI
Finally we finished our research in sending MIDI signals from Flash to other apps. To do so, we developed a little proxy app which sends MIDI signals. At first, Flash sends commands via a networking interface to the proxy app which acts as a server. Afterwards, the proxy app converts this data to MIDI signals which will be passes to a virtual MIDI interface. This interface is connected to our synthesizer. This allows us to control any MIDI-enabled app just as good as you would do it with controller hardware.

For testing purposes we coded a little framework which consists of some small classes and some GUI elements like buttons, sliders and a two-axis-panning field.

Current problems
# The whole synthesizer stuff is very very CPU intensive. So we have to optimize it or use a better machine (which is also difficult because of the software licenses).
# Sometimes there are big latencies when transfering the controller data from Flash to the synthesizer. Maybe it is also related to the CPU usage of the softsynths. We have to investigate this issue.

New possibility
# Because of the networking interface, it is also possible to use multiple computers to control the synths. So the interface can be run through another machine which is also better for performance reasons.

Katarina Sengstaken, Timea Tofalvi, Yuxiang Wen, and Shuo Liu: A Faraway Cold Palace (广寒宫)
Installation Concept
A faraway Cold Palace is a room installation featuring sound, lights, leaves, and dust to abstractly simulate the feeling of being on the moon. Our concept of the moon stems from the three Chinese moon myths the story of Chang'e 嫦娥, Wu Gang吴刚 , and the Jade Rabbit 玉兔. These three myths revolve around a mystical laurel tree that grows on the moon.
We will use sound to represent the myths, the sound of an axe chopping at the tree to illustrate the story of Wu Gang, a fan flapping for the story of Chang’e, and the sound of a mortar grinding as representation of the Jade rabbit story. As for the tree it’s represented by white bay leaves tied to translucent string attached to mechanical pulleys in the ceiling that will slowly raise and drop the leaves.
The room is lit by black lights that run along the base of the walls. The floor is covered with gray dust spotted with craters with constructed dust free walkways, to give the impression of the moons surface.

Our project comes from the recent discovery and search for water on the moon. That raised the question for us, on what life on the moon would be like, and what alien lifeforms would be like. Which brought us to discussing mythology, especially Chinese myths about the moon, and so is our pieces inspiration.
Daniela Stade: To Fetch The Stars From Heaven
The Idea
We know constellations in heaven, for example the zodiac. The International Atronomical Union(IAU) published a list of 88 constellations. I want to find similar constellations on earth, which are formed by cities.

I am going to find these constellations by pictures of a satellite.
Here you can see the Ursa Major (der große Wagen/the big dipper):

And here you can see the same constellation built by cities on earth:

Maybe I am going to create a new type of starmap, but up to now i am not sure.

Jan Frederik Vogt
Bring Them Back
We took the stars from the sky

– Stars are used by us. You can find them in logos, distinctions, decorations, jewellery, names, pictures and many other uses. –

I want to collect them and bring them back to where they belong to.

– This will show the different meanings and usages of stars in our society.

At the end of the semester I want to exhibit all the pieces I have found by then. I will build a star-spattered sky out of my collection at the ceiling. So the visitors of the exhibition have to climb on a ladder or a chair to have a closer look at it.

Gedanken meiner Idee

Konzepte
*Spieldesign das ganze Leben des Raumschiffs
Dieses Spiel wird in verschiedenen Nivea gestalten.
Luo Yu: The Virtual Solar System (3D Online-Platform)
The Idea
We live in the solar system and it is our nearest galaxy. I would like to make a simulation for the solar system, the initial idea is to use flash platform with ActionScript programming, I want to design a virtual mini-universe and will make this space into a virtual online exhibition, people will be able to access this place through the network.

I will design a virtual space with the solar system's nine planets, nebulae and all kinds of meteorites analog out. The Visitors can make use of the mouse and keyboard keys such as "up", "down", "left" and "right" in the whole space random wandering. To make the simulation more realistic, I will collect the texture first. Of course I can design a variety of sound effects too, for example: when I click a planet, it will send an interesting sound. Although that is a simulation of the solar system, but I will give this space a particular style, and the website will receive a seemly interfaces-design.
