''Alternative Rhythms''

''C''an we tune into alternative rhythms in order to escape the confines of our restrictive, linear, hegemonic time?

What does it mean to be ‘in’ or ‘out’ of time? What lies ''outside'' of our rhythmic perception? What inhabits the in-between? How can we reach the out of sync space? How can rhythm be used as a method of becoming other… becoming symbiotic(?)… becoming post-human?

Rhythm and time are two intertwined concepts, rhythm operates within '''a''' time. Time as we know it was mainly imposed in order to divide up our existence and mould us into the perfect workers. Our natural rhythms have been shaped, twisted and squeezed until we can no longer see outside of ourselves or beyond the machines of capitalism and control.

As a bassist I understand the experience of ‘locking in’ to a rhythm, surrendering yourself and your thoughts and simply allowing things to flow freely. Could this be extended beyond the musical? A way to get past our human qualities for something other?

By investigating the rhythmic qualities of the non-human, both life and non life, I hope to find and offer alternative rhythms in which to view/experience our surroundings.

CONCEPT:

Are you bored with Western scientific practices?

Do you wish there was more compassion in lab work?

''HOW TO MAKE SLIME MOLD LAUGH'' is an innovative new project birthed from the Bauhaus DIY Biolab. After an initial interest in physarum polycephalum, we [Marleen and Amy], stumbled across an article titled “Electrocute Slime Mold Long Enough and it’ll apparently make music”. Why is our first instinct to electrocute things? We decided that the slime mold was probably screaming…

Why not instead of making them scream we could make them ''laugh''? This way you could still have the slime mold produce sound but from a place of pleasure as opposed to exploitation and cruelty. When considering new methods of working with live cultures we questioned the traditional scientific methods which seem to be hierarchical and focused on extractive practices. We wondered how this process could become an energy exchange and reciprocal; with the slime mold learning about us as we learn about them.

How to make something/someone laugh? By using jokes of course. The original plan included a study-like process with control groups, e.g. jokes being told to one group and scientific papers being read to the other.

However the actual process was a lot slower, with us first having to understand how to make the slime mold happy. We focused on trying to keep them alive, to learn which foods they like and how to not contaminate their (artificial) homes (petri dishes and jars). For a more holistic approach, we exposed them to different environments and gave them different foods, told them jokes and even took them outside of the lab: to the park, our homes, parties and the ice rink.

We were interested in whether giving them a good time and good vibes could encourage them to grow and flourish.

Our project is certainly ambitious and promising. For now we wish to simply record and document the process by paying respect to all of the slime mold we have used in the experiment thus far. We are aware that it’s been difficult to not reproduce traditional scientific methods within our practice but we hope that our practice has been gentle and a more pleasant experience for the slime mold.
The steadily growing population and the associated need for more building and manufacturing activities pose almost insurmountable challenges for architecture and the industry as a whole. The need for more sustainable alternatives pushed research towards possibly grown materials, e.g. materials composed of agro/forestry leftovers processed by microbes. Fungal composites is just one of many example, and could therefore offer a promising alternatives to resource intense construction and fabrication materials.

These fungal composites can be produced in the near future in a way that is both climate-friendly and cost-effective. In addition, they can be easily separated, fully composted and used as fertilizer after the end of their life, thus closing the loop and making of them a "circular material". Thus, the use of fungi could create a lightweight and fully circular building system.

In this course we will use artistic approaches to design with Fungi, understand their way of growing on natural matter, explore how they relate to other easily cultivable living beings, and create own art-work out of this experience.

In the end the artistic pieces will be exhibited at the Winterwerkschau.
The project module introduces into media that moderate the living and the digital. We look into environments in their diverse natures, and how various actors live in them, network and relate to each other. The aim is to develop interfaces, methods and practices that enable such communication between different actors. The project addresses both questions of craftsmanship in the use of sensors as well as the performative use of media as an enactment of a writing of history and culture of technologies. In the end, our physicality is and remains the central point of orientation and the measure of reference and evaluation. Subjectivity - experienced as artistic expression - remains an essential measure for artefacts in the making. But addressing the subjectivity of the other person also means taking their interests into account and planning for them.

On this basis we want to thematize ideological questions that arise from the narratives of performance with media and how these can be brought into a non-violent relation and strategy to and in the present.

The project expects participants to conceive and elaborate a self-defined work, but also offers numerous literature and digressions on the topic.

Students are expected to be able and willing to work in a self-organized manner and to actively engage in the discourses of the module.

A prerequisite is prior enrollment in a specialized module with the co-workers of GMU or the Interface Design Professorship.
====== Hogger Interface Workshop [(27.11.2023) with Daniel Wessolek] ======
Sensors are great, but how do we collect their data? On the one hand, there is the classical data-logging approach of saving it all on e.g. a SD-card, on the other hand we can have on-the-fly data transmission over the Open Sound Control (OSC) protocol to a client. Regardless of which way you prefer, in this workshop we will be working on the interface design of a new open hardware project going by the name of '''Hogger'''. To hog things is normally not considered polite, but the Hogger is an data-logger, so it is o.k. in this case.

We will split in groups to think collectively about concrete scenarios, how you would use the Hogger, what the specific interface for your usage scenario should look like, where and how you would attach it, deal with the weather, battery limitations etc.

Does it need a display for you purpose? How do you adjust the settings, the interval, or maybe the IP port? With a rotary encoder? Buttons? We will find out together!

An accompanying course of the modules of the professorship is recommended.

An accompanying course of the modules of the professorship is recommended.

Were we really meant to live in this way? Our natural rhythms have been shaped, twisted and squeezed until we can no longer see outside of ourselves or beyond the machines of capitalism and control.

As a bassist I understand the experience of ‘locking in’ to a rhythm, surrendering yourself and your thoughts and simply allowing things to flow freely. Could this be extended beyond the musical? A way to get past our human qualities for something other?

By investigating the rhythmic qualities of the non-human, both life and non life, I hope to find and offer alternative rhythms in which to view/experience our surroundings.
