''Erster Termin:'' Mo, April 7th 2014

==Three-dimensional web-interfaces==
new approaches in eCommerce and eLearning
This course is dedicated to all design- and media-students who are interested in frontend-development of websites and applications and have first experience in complex visualization techniques (using CSS3-Transforms or WebGL or other techniques). The course is like an optional continuation of the last semester course "Three-dimensional web-interfaces - new approaches in visualization, interaction and animation".

This semester we will explore (from the point of view of the user) the possible use of 3D in eCommerce- and eLearning-applications. In our research we will create prototype-based applications to define the potential between 2D and 3D visualization. How can we evaluate the experience of a user who is operating in a webshop. Are there any positiv/negativ effects when we visualize the products of the webshop in 3D in comparison to conventional 2D visualization (like picture-slideshows)?

And don't worry about the experimental character: most of the defined solutions can be transfered to the conventional two-dimensional web-development.

== Registration Procedure ==
To register for the course, please send an eMail due to April 5th with the Topic "Registration for {{PAGENAME}}" to Gabriel.Rausch (at) uni-weimar.de,
incuding the following informations:
* Angabe der geltenden Prüfungsordnung (eg. PV27 or PV29)
* Valid email address @uni-weimar.de
* One short sentence why you want to (have to) be in this course (german or english)

If there are more than 15 registrations, students will be accepted depending on:
* Order (first come, first serve)
* If you are in a Project of Interface-Design (see Prof. Jens Geelhaar's semester projects this semester)
* What you've written in "why I want to be in this course"

If there are more than 20 registrations, there might be a kick-off event with an evaluation competition.

''Venue:'' [[Marienstraße 7b]], Room 105<br />
''First meeting:'' Tuesday, 22. October 2013

==Beschreibung==

Themen:
* siehe englische Auflistung

'''Hinweis:''' Wer mit mehreren Endgeräten und Web-Synchronisation arbeiten will, dem wird der gleichzeitige Besuch des Werk-/Fachmoduls von Kollege Gabriel Rausch empfohlen, das auch auf Serverseitige Programmierung eingeht. Aus zeitlichen Gründen können wir das in diesem Kurs nicht tun.

==English description==

Did you ever wish to design an app for your iPhone? Or do you have an idea for this nice creative coding experience on your iPad? Do you have a new Android Tablet and want to make something cool with it? This is your chance!

We will work with the latest cross-platform HTML5 web technologies (mainly the ECMA scripting language, better known as JavaScript; including CSS3) to create applications that will run on your mobile device.

Topics will be:
* Creative Coding on mobile devices
* Introduction to Programming
** Variables
** Functions / Methods
** Objects
** Events
** Best practices and Software Design Patterns (Accessors: Getters/Setters, Creating Objects, Modules…)
* ECMA Script (JavaScript)
* CSS3 (Design, Animation, Transition…)
* HTML5 (Multitouch, Geolocation, Device Orientation, Local Storage, Canvas, WebAudio, SVG...)
* Communication Protocols (JSON, AJAX with XMLHttpRequest), using the API of WebServices (Google, FlickR, Twitter, Yahoo Pipes, Facebook...)
* JavaScript Libraries (Processing.js, Paper.js, D3.js, jQuery Mobile and many more…)
* Webapps and Hybrid Apps (that's a webApp that is wrapped in a native application that you can download from an app store)

This course will most likely be held in English

* Your own mobile device that's capable of browsing the internet
* If you have a computer running Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, you'll get a free copy of [http://procoding.audiocommander.de Procoding]
* If you have an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch running iOS 7 or newer, you'll get a free copy of [http://procoding.audiocommander.de Procoding Mobile]
* Procoding is not required, if you have another system, you'll get a starter package that you can edit with the code editor of your choice.

The urban development kit
In the course of the project, several methods will be created and formulated to design cities a new and in a better manner. The proposals should be designed in the form of sets - either as games, products, model kits or instructions - that will be made accessible to an interested audience.
The scope of activities is here rather wide: tools and apparatus to raise awareness can be developed, strategies for meeting/happenings or performances could be organized, exhibitions and installations in public spaces could take place. Speculative, ephemeral and revolutionary designs and projects should deploy themselves in concrete, innovative and unseen (city-) situations.
1. Coursework 10% - assignment in written form: research to a chosen topic/to the developed project in the fields of art history, urbanistics, media theory or another discipline, whereas a work/topic should be chosen individually as a reference that stands exemplary to an activity.
2. Coursework 10 % - assignment in spoken form: oral presentation on a topic chosen individually that stays in relationship to the developed practical proposal

3. Active participation in the project colloquium

== '''Hidden City''' ==

This project is based on artistic practices using cartographies to find different ways to see, experience and understand life, either real or imagined.

As part of the research, a prototype of an interface design based on participatory web was developed and analyzed. Understanding “participatory web” as the term used in Web 2.0 referring to web applications that simplify the sharing of information. It is oriented to promote citizen participation and collective creativity. It is a project for static and mobile devices that uses maps for data visualization.

Under the term “hidden city” we understand events happening spontaneously at some place in the city and that we rarely are conscious about. The fast rhythm of the city makes us blind for such events. This is the reason why they go unnoticed, even though are there.

After all: “What is a city? A place with a lot of people. A public space open and protected. A place, namely, a material fact of sense production. A concentration of meeting points. In the city first are the streets and plazas, the collective spaces, then come the buildings and tracks". [1]

Therefore, we state that these events shape the nature of a city; making it more human-like. Where the public space is not just a space, where not only the physical dimensions but also the social, cultural and symbolic dimensions are confluent.

Nowadays, maps are more than a physical and linear representation of territory. They are means to express concerns, reflect or criticize the public space and the urban life in a very subjective way. The portrayal of these maps expands and upgrades its content with other kinds of information and signification, placing us as active individuals in the global space, making us part of something, an identity.

It is interesting to explore the possibilities that these means offer not just to situate us geographically in some global coordinates, but also to place us inside a problematic, a social experience or an identity. Crucially, we can share all these information with the rest of the world. This remind us of the global village that McLuhan used to talk about. Furthermore, it lets us see how far individuals can be away from each other despite of living in the same place. Not only can technology bring us together, it can also separate us. Therefore, this is a good practice to generate different employment of technology that can prevent these things from happening but encourages collective creativity to expand social awareness and collective memory.

Notes
[1] Borja, Jordi, La ciudad del deseo. Flacso, Ecuador, 2001. Translation by Adriana Román.
"¿Qué es una ciudad? Un lugar con mucha gente. Un espacio público, abierto y protegido. Un lugar, es decir, un hecho material productor de sentido. Una concentración de puntos de encuentro. En la ciudad lo primero son las calles y plazas, los espacios colectivos, luego vendrán los edificios y las vías.”

== Specific Objectives bye the requirements: ==

1.To build metaphorically a global vision about places shaping the hidden city, generating a collective visual poem about the city (i.e. Valencia).
2.To design a multi platform and multi device interface with information layers.
3.To generate and communicate poetics through the interface and interaction design.
4.To Capture and optimize images.
5.To locate and visualize images on the map with real geo information.
6.To refer and orient the information points through the navigation map.
7.To visualize verses on their own (without images), for the creation of the collective poem as well as to be archived, sent or publish on social networks.
8.To generate short poems narrowing by: neighborhoods or zones, randomly or direct selection by the user in an specific order.
9.To visualize short poems effectively and aesthetically.
10.To generate drifts from the verses selection.
11.To notify if the user is near the geolocation a verse.

== Motivations ==

To incite citizens to think about their own city and reflect how is the city they would like to live in with a positive question. Instead of asking "What do not like you about the city?" through the app we ask "What do you like the most about your city?".
Cabanyal issue (gentrification). How this problems repeat itself in more places around the world.
To give a guide on the daily production of images.
Among all the negative ideas, create positive ideas and feelings.

Crucially, we can share all these information with the rest of the world. This remind us of the global village that McLuhan used to talk about. Furthermore, it lets us see how far individuals can be away from each other despite of living in the same place. Not only can technology bring us together, it can also separate us Therefore, this is a good practice to generate different employment of technology that can prevent these things from happening but encourages collective creativity to expand social awareness and collective memory.

'''Hidden City'''

After all: “¿Qué es una ciudad? Un lugar con mucha gente. Un espacio público, abierto y protegido. Un lugar, es decir, un hecho material productor de sentido. Una concentración de puntos de encuentro. En la ciudad lo primero son las calles y plazas, los espacios colectivos, luego vendrán los edificios y las vías.” [1]

Therefore, we state that these events shape the nature of a city; making it more human-like. Where the public space is not just a space, where the physical dimensions but also the social, cultural and symbolic dimensions are confluent.

Not only can technology bring us together, it can also separate us Therefore, this is a good practice to generate different employment of technology that can prevent these things from happening but encourages collective creativity to expand social awareness and collective memory.

4. Course work 60 % - presentation of a work
The project directs itself to MFA students.

==Beschreibung==

Themen:
* siehe englische Auflistung

'''Hinweis:''' Wer mit mehreren Endgeräten und Web-Synchronisation arbeiten will, dem wird der gleichzeitige Besuch des Werk-/Fachmoduls von Kollege Gabriel Rausch empfohlen, das auch auf Serverseitige Programmierung eingeht. Aus zeitlichen Gründen können wir das in diesem Kurs nicht tun.

==English description==

* Introduction to Programming
** Variables
** Functions / Methods
** Objects
** Events
** Best practices and Software Design Patterns (Accessors: Getters/Setters, Creating Objects, Modules…)
* ECMA Script (JavaScript)
* CSS3 (Design, Animation, Transition…)
* HTML5 (Multitouch, Geolocation, Device Orientation, Local Storage, Canvas, WebAudio, SVG...)
* Communication Protocols (JSON, AJAX with XMLHttpRequest), using the API of WebServices (Google, FlickR, Twitter, Yahoo Pipes, Facebook...)
* JavaScript Libraries (Processing.js, Paper.js, D3.js, jQuery Mobile and many more…)
* Webapps and Hybrid Apps (that's a webApp that is wrapped in a native application that you can download from an app store)

This course will most likely be held in English
