1. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar library takes stock of 2024
The change towards Open Access in research publishing has led to great change in our acquisitions budget last year. Where in the past the library distinguished mainly the cost of printed and electronic items, 2024 saw the addition of publication expenses as a larger separate budget item. This shift makes it plain that the library is increasingly becoming a service provider for research publishing. The steadily growing importance of electronic information services is also reflected in the access numbers to online items, which have been increasing for years: in 2024, 46,938 digital documents and 109,193 e-journal articles were accessed in full. At the same time, the university library remains popular as a physical location. Last year we counted 135,437 visitors. Opening up the co-working space in early summer 2024 proved highly popular with students and further increased the attraction of the library and auditorium building as a place to study, work and communicate.
Please refer to the press release for further information.

3. A pioneer of science photograpy in the 20th century: exhibition provides insight into the work of Fritz Goro
Fritz Goro was a student at the early Bauhaus in Weimar in 1921 and 1922 and became one of the most significant science photographers in the USA in later years. Bauhaus-Universität Weimar honours Goros extraordinary contributions to science photography and shows the exhibition »Fritz Goro: Fotografie zwischen Kunst und Wissenschaft« in the university library from March 6th. The exhibition features works from five decades that highlight crucial stations in a career shaped by Goro’s Jewish/German/American exile history.
The Ausstellungseröffnung will be held on March 6th 2025, 5pm, in the Maurice Halbwachs auditorium, with speakers Peter Benz (university president), Nicole Schlabach (Sparkassen-Kulturstiftung Hessen-Thüringen), Michael Siebenbrodt (Weimar Bauhaus expert) and Eva Castringius (curator). The curator will offer a tour of the exhibition.
4. Lesarten 2025 is about to start!

»zeitlos« - timeless – is the motto for the 28th installment of the Weimar contemporary literature reading festival. From March 20th to April 17th there will be a full schedule of readings, movies and interactive formats, starting with Deutscher Buchpreis recipient Martina Hefter reading from her acclaimed novel »Hey Guten Morgen, wie geht es Dir?« on March 20th in the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek.
Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is once again a partner of the festival this year. We would therefore like to draw special attention to these events:
Bauhaus, the East German star architect, two emancipating women and the traps within the system: On March 26thFlorentine Anders will read from »Die Allee« in the lounge in the library building. A subsequent talk will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Daniela Spiegel (Chair of Heritage Conservation and Architectural History at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar faculty of architecture and urbanism) and Dr. Bianka Trötschel-Daniels (Scientific Manager of the International Heritage Centre at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar).
From comedy to horror: On April 9th Olivia Vieweg will introduce her latest graphic novel in the public library. Olivia Vieweg is one of Germany’s most successful comics artists and an alumna of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, and has established herself in the German and international comics scene with her unique body of work. The artist will read from Fangirl Fantasy as well as give insights into her creation process. Following the reading there will be a talk with Dr. Moritz Lampe, subject librarian for art and design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar library.
In association with this event the university library will house the exhibition »Held*innen – Comics von Olivia Vieweg« (»Heroes – Comics by Olivia Vieweg«) from April 8th until May 8th. There will be an opening ceremony on April 8th at 4pm, with a lauditory speech by Werner Holzwarth.
