Open call for a new »European Bauhaus Weimar«
In October 2020, Ursula von der Leyen issued a call for a new European Bauhaus. In the call, von der Leyen describes the current global challenges and the need for a new movement aimed towards creating more sustainable cities and more worthwhile living. While the »Green Deal« is focussed on conserving our resources and reducing CO2 emissions, it is also intended to be a new cultural project for Europe. von der Leyen cites the historic Bauhaus as a source of inspiration that brought together art, craft and technology a hundred years ago. And that’s what it’s still about today: in light of the global challenge of climate change, the question is how can we shape the future together through the interaction of technology, science, art and design?
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is applying to be one of the five locations for the new »European Bauhaus«. An interdisciplinary team will be formulating a cross-university approach in early 2021 for the application, which will then be expanded into a concept made up of a broad range of content together with a number of partners from Thuringia, Germany, and around the world. All instructors, students and staff at the university are welcome to participate in and contribute their ideas to this major undertaking and future-oriented project.
»Here at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, we combine shaping the future with a living cultural heritage. We work together closely every day here in teaching and research to develop and implement new ideas and concepts for a sustainable environment worth living in. All of the faculties are united in asking the questions: How are society and the environment changing as a result of modern technology? What does the relationship between humans, the environment and technology need to look like in the future? How can we live together today and in the future? And how do we want to live together?«
Prof. Dr. Winfried Speitkamp
President of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar
In order to jointly advance the project of the new »European Bauhaus Weimar«, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has called on all teachers, students and employees to participate in an open call. With over 60 contributions from students and teachers from all faculties, the response has been remarkable. A wide range of designs and ideas were submitted, which deal creatively, artistically and critically with climate change, CO2 reduction and, in connection with this, the self-image of our university.
This Friday, 19 February 2021 from 2 pm – 5 pm, the submissions will be presented at the Ideas Pitch via BigBlueButton:
Meeting-Room: Europa-Bauhaus-AG
Meeting URL: https://meeting.uni-weimar.de/b/jul-otw-xsj-d7i

Use the event to directly ask the contributing actors questions in a personal chat, to enter into the discussion, to make appointments beyond the scope of the event, to network, to establish working groups or to participate in them in order to introduce and jointly advance your own ideas.
