In the place where Johannes Itten laid the foundations for Bauhaus education 100 years ago with his pre-course, over the past few decades the introductory course has served as a bridge between diverse educational backgrounds and the challenges of architectural studies at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The course is taking an interdisciplinary approach for the second time: in the 2019/20 winter semester, it is incorporating two faculties, three degree programmes and four professorships.
»Students spend the initial week getting graphically attuned to their new place of study. Following this, they work intensively during the second week in teams on a staircase in the city or park, surveying it, experimenting with movement patterns and developing group choreography that culminates in a performance at the end of the introductory course«, explains Professor Bernd Rudolf, director of the »Architektur« Bachelor’s degree programme at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
On 24 October 2019 at 12 pm, around 100 newly matriculated students guided visitors on a special tour entitled »Upstairs-Downstairs«.
