Email from the Presidium: Latest information on in-person teaching, the 3G rule, opening of buildings, etc.

Dear university members,

Beginning on 20 March 2022, the current »Infektionsschutzgesetzes« (Infection Prevention Act) will no longer be in effect. We are planning the upcoming summer semester at our university as an in-person semester, taking into consideration the following points:

  1. Continuing to adhere to the AHAL (distancing, hygiene, mask + ventilation) regulations
  2. Ending 3G compliance checks as well as the collection of contact details
  3. Using classrooms and other teaching rooms in accordance with occupational safety measures
  4. Opening university buildings as soon as possible
  5. Informing employees on working from home and business travel
  6. Providing additional information from the individual faculties and departments

Due to the high current infection rates, providing safe studying and working conditions will remain an important common goal, even after March 20. The transition to a normal, in-person campus life with all of its various exchange opportunities will be carefully carried out in a step by step manner when necessary and implemented as swiftly as possible. We are pleased to say that agreements between students and instructors in particular have been, for the most part, successful — thank you!

1. Continuing to Adhere to the AHAL (distancing, hygiene, mask + ventilation) Regulations

The basic regulations on maintaining distance, observing proper hygiene, wearing a mask and proper ventilation still apply. The University Directorate and the deans of the faculties have agreed that wearing a mask is mandatory if maintaining a distance of 1.5 metres between individuals is not possible. In lecture halls, for example, the current regulations are still in effect: If the room is at 25% occupancy, masks are not required; if the room is at 50% occupancy, masks must be worn. The maximum number of individuals permitted at indoor and outdoor gatherings will be taken from the regulations set by the city of Weimar and the state of Thuringia. These regulations should be determined in approximately two weeks.

2. Ending 3G Compliance Checks as well as the Collection of Contact Details

The current 3G rule for access to university buildings and for participating in in-person teaching events will no longer be in effect and will not be replaced. Contact tracing will also no longer be carried out. The university is committed to maintaining the test centre on campus so that it can be easily accessed should additional safety measures be required. Depending on the legal situation, further steps may be taken in accordance with the current Basic Hygiene Plan.

3. Using Classrooms and Other Teaching Rooms in Accordance with Occupational Safety Measures

The understandable desire for more possibilities for using student workrooms is easier to implement than for workshops, where occupational health and safety regulations for employees must be observed at all costs. All those involved are striving to find the best options.

4. Opening University Buildings

University buildings are set to reopen for university members and visitors at the start of the summer semester lecture period. The Van de Velde Winkelbau specifically will be accessible again starting on 4 April. The opening times for this building are scheduled from Monday to Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm. Until at least the end of May, visitors to the designated World Heritage Site buildings will be accompanied by student assistants.

Masks must continue to be worn in all corridors and common areas.

5. Informing Employees on Working from Home and Business Travel

Starting on 20 March, employees are no longer required to work from home. The infection rates in Weimar and Thuringia remain very high. The Presidium and the Staff Council have agreed to follow the recommendations by the »Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin« (Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), allowing pandemic-related home office to continue during a transitional period for the summer semester until 15 July. The necessary personnel resources for an in-person semester must be guaranteed. By providing this guarantee, we are taking into account infection prevention and using this period to finalise agreements on alternating remote and/or mobile work where appropriate and desired. Additional information on this and business travel will soon be available at https://www.uni-weimar.de/de/universitaet/struktur/zentrale-einrichtungen/servicezentrum-sicherheitsmanagement/information-zum-coronavirus/faq/faq-fuer-beschaeftigte/.

6. Providing Additional Information from the Individual Faculties and Departments

Because the use of workrooms, workshops, labs and PC pools may vary depending on the faculty and department, this important information will soon be available on the individual websites. Below are the links to the four faculties’ websites:

The University Library is planning to limit the number of workstations available to students. Registration via the thoska terminal will no longer be possible as of 4 April.

The revised basic regulations are clearly summarised at www.uni-weimar.de/coronavirus.

We would like to invite you to a meeting open to all university members at the start of the semester on 8 April at the Bauhaus.Atelier (2 - 5 pm), with time allotted for conversation and exchange. Together with university staff and instructors, we look forward to seeing you there and in large numbers during the summer semester!

Until then, we wish you all the best on behalf of the Board of Governance
