FAQs - Research stays abroad
General issues
May I apply only for one or for several projects?
You may apply for all three funding formats.
I have been granted a scholarship by the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. May I still be funded?
Yes, you may. However, please note that only expenses that are not funded by third parties (incl. other institutions of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar) can be funded by the Bauhaus Research School.
I have been granted a DAAD scholarship. May I still be funded?
Yes, you may. However, please note that only expenses which are not funded by third parties like the DAAD can be funded by the BRS.
The graduate admissions committee has not admitted me to the doctorate. May I still apply?
The graduate admissions committee must have admitted the candidate before the application for funding.
Being an employee of the university, may I be funded?
Yes, you may, as far as you are a doctoral candidate at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (on this see Issue No. 5). Please note the funding information for employees of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
What is meant by “providing evidence of the kind and amount of external funding or applied for external funding”?
The BRS funds only those expenses which are not completely or partly funded by third parties. This is why we need evidence of which expenses are funded by third parties. A letter (or an e-mail) by a funding third party may be applicable as such an evidence.
Research stays
8. What is considered as a foreign stay for research?
Research stays refer to all stays for the purpose of your own active research work at a research institution (e. g. university, research institute) or practical partner (e. g. an enterprise. These stays must be abroad and must be clearly connected to your doctorate (see Issue 9). Paid teaching activities are not funded.
9. What is meant by “connection to the doctorate”?
The funding is meant to support you as a candidate. Your research stay must result in a comprehensible added value for your doctorate. This is the case e. g. if you do research work abroad, further develop your doctorate project or acquire knowledge and skills you need for completing your doctorate.
10. May travels on the occasion of defending the thesis be funded?
We are sorry that this is not possible. Travels for the purpose of defending the thesis cannot be funded, neither in Weimar nor abroad.
Who can be funded?
11. I am an external candidate not living in Germany. May I still apply for the funding of a research or practical work stay?
It is not possible to fund research trips which did not start in Germany.
Application and documents
12. May I apply several times?
You can apply more than once. However, the principle of diversity of funding applies and doctoral candidates who have be funded during the current calendar year for a research stay abroad will be subordinately considered.
13. Why do I need an official letter by the hosting institution?
We want to be sure that both you and we will have a local contact partner. However, such a letter does not mean any obligation towards the host institution in the sense of on-site support. “Host institution” does not necessarily refer to another university. It may also refer to other research institutions or practical work partners of any kind.
14. Until when must my application be received?
until 31 March 2020.
External funding
15. My travel expenses are paid by the hosting institution. May I still be funded by the BRS?
Yes, but you will only be paid the grant for accommodation if your application has been awarded for funding.
16. I have applied at the DAAD for a short-term scholarship. May I still apply for funding of the BRS?
Yes, you may. However, you may not be funded parallel by the DAAD and by the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. As soon as your application has been accepted or rejected by the DAAD, you must inform the Bauhaus Research School.
Travel organisation
17. Are expenses taken into consideration which have been made before the funding has been granted?
You may organise your intended journey before receiving the funding decision.
18. May I start the trip without having received the funding approval?
Yes, you may.
19. My travel data have changed. What now?
Please send an informal information by e-mail to ipid@uni-weimar.de. If your stay is shortened to less than 4 weeks, the grants will be reduced accordingly. In case of an extension of your stay there is no provision for increased funding. Postponement of your journey within one calendar year has no consequences.
20. I would like to take somebody with me. Will that affect the funding?
No, it will not.
No departure
22. I will not be able to start my trip. What will be consequences for my funding?
Funding is valid only for the trip you have applied for. If you are completely prevented from starting it, the funding approval expires (on changed travel data see Issue 19). Funding is in principle not applicable to others.
Payment
23. When will the funding be paid?
Payment will happen after your stay, after you have presented the original receipts for your travel and accommodation costs (invoice, tickets), your bank details (IBAN, BIC), as well as a short report (on this see Issue No. 25) to the Bauhaus Research School.
24. My expenses exceeded the funding. Will I now be paid more?
No, you will not. You will only be paid the fixed grants as it is specified in your funding approval.
25. What must be part of the report?
The report must inform about the goals, stations and results of the funded journey. It should not be longer than 5 pages.
