As the winter semester begins, students and instructors are coming together once again in seminar rooms, lecture halls and workshops at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The faculties have started the new semester by welcoming 979 newly enrolled students. In-person courses are being supplemented by digital content. In this latest contact.bauhaus issue, you can learn about current research that enables an early warning system against outbreaks, a startup that has turned hand-washing into an event, the new Bauhaus-Guest Professorship, film and lecture series, alumni news, special birthdays, awards and graduation ceremonies.

As part of the inter-faculty Bauhaus.Modules, students developed solutions to the climate crisis and created an exhibit during the summer semester for the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference. This resulted in three videos which were presented and awarded prizes at the university’s annual exhibition. The winning team has now been invited by the UN to the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow. > more

Renowned architect Prof. Diébédo Francis Kéré will be taking over the Bauhaus-Guest Professorship this winter semester. He brings with him a wealth of expertise on socially sustainable architecture, which will influence the Bauhaus-Guest Professorship lectures and workshops. Central to his work is the focus on locality, reflected not only in his predilection for using local materials like clay or wood, but also in the participation of the local population. In light of the Green Deal and the New European Bauhaus proclaimed by the European Commission, th university is anticipating new and refreshing perspectives. > more

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is getting a new scientific facility: the International Heritage Centre. The goal of this new institution is to promote international and interdisciplinary cooperation within the field of cultural heritage. The importance of cultural heritage in the face of global changes like digitalisation and climate change is just as great of a concern as the demands that cultural heritage places on science and society. The new facility will serve as a coordinator of cultural heritage research, teaching and outreach, and will pursue urban, local and international collaborations. > more

On 17 November 2021, »Wissenschaftstag« will be held for the first time as a hybrid event at the university. The event will include the university awards ceremony as well as the »Nachwuchswettbewerb« and the Elevator Pitch. The event is specifically dedicated to the various opportunities for academic career paths. Researchers such as Dr. Lisa Vollmer, Dr. Elena Vogman and Dr. Hayder Alsaad will offer insights into their current projects in a panel discussion moderated by Prof. Dr. Tom Lahmer. > more

This year’s annual eTeach-Netzwerk Thüringen conference focussed from the instructors’ perspectives on, among other things, approaches for using alternative and media-supported examination formats, independent-learning courses, game-based approaches to teaching, and testing out virtual excursions and collaborative software solutions. Additionally, the initial four eTeach-Netzwerk cooperation impulse projects were presented. > more

The Thuringian Competence Network for Research Data Management is continuing its Coffee Lecture series. Free online events include topics such as preregistration, collaborative platforms, data literacy, knowledge management and artificial intelligence. The TKFDM is the research data management partner for researchers from universities across Thuringia. > more

A region-wide wastewater monitoring system that can be used to detect viruses, antibiotic resistance and other microbial traces is in the works in Thuringia. The system will allow for early detection and will help to contain coronavirus outbreaks. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and Analytik Jena GmbH are working together to develop accessible technologies to analyse municipal wastewater. The state has provided the project with 370,000 euros in funding. > more

The Jena-based, award winning company heyfair once again made headlines during the Global Handwashing Day 2021. A yellow soap has made handwashing a special event. Alumni from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar founded heyfair as a startup in 2017. They developed a temporarily visible hand disinfectant, which makes it easier for the user to disinfect their hands more precisely. > more

The Faculty of Media will be celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special ceremony in the Audimax. The faculty was founded in October 1996 with a concept that was unique in Germany: Examining media in its many forms from artistic, techinical and humanities perspectives. > more

The Startup Hub »neudeli« is celebrating its 20th birthday this year; founded in 2001 in a former delicatessen located in downtown Weimar, neudeli is now home to as many as 16 startup projects in the Gründungsvilla at Helmholzstraße 16, where it offers individual support and a space to implement new ideas. > more

Even this year, a large number of students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering successfully completed their final examinations. Because a graduation ceremony could not take place in the traditional sense, the faculty came up with something special: Students who graduated in the years 2019 to 2021 will be honoured with a film that was created especially for this occasion. > more

Alumni interviews Alumni | Katharina Benjamin publishes interviews with architects from around the world and asks them about their current projects. A former student of architecture in Weimar, Benjamin is a construction influencer, whose photos illustrate the beauty of buildings that have been completed. In her latest interview, she talks to Beverly Engelbrecht, another former architecture student in Weimar. > more

A project designed to last 100 years has had Freie Kunst students and alumni, as well as external artists, designing and producing trophies for citizens of the Thuringian town of Zella-Mehlis. > more
