Job Opening

The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is seeking to fill a position at the Chair for European Cities and Urban Heritage as a

Research Associate (m/f/d)

starting from September, 1st, 2025 within the research project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) »Authoritarian urbanism in the 21st century. Progressive urban design and participatory planning in Hungary and Serbia«. This part-time position (65 %, 26 hours/week) is a three years fixed term appointment.

The research project seeks to gain insights into the the role of urban development within rising processes of autocratization in contemporary societies and to identify the particularities of current manifestations and workings of authoritarian urbanism in Hungary and Serbia. In order to do so, the project focuses on counterintuitive developments, that is the growing importance of participatory planning and progressive urban design in contexts facing autocratization.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the case study Hungary within the described research project
  • Literature analysis, case study research and analysis, field visits and field research, development of methods
  • Data collection and scientific analysis (including discourse analysis, interviews, participant observation), analysis and documentation of data, organisation of workshops, writing of scientific texts
  • The possibility of qualification (doctorate) is given.

Employment Requirements:

  • successfully completed studies in planning, spatial or social sciences (Master's degree, university diploma or comparable qualification),
  • independent research interest,
  • high level of competence in scientific work and writing
  • familiarity with the fields and debates in urban development, urban planning and design,
  • Knowledge of empirical methods in urban studies, preferably experience with discourse analysis and interviews,
  • very good written and spoken Hungarian,
  • very good knowledge of written and spoken English or German.
