Project description

This interim presentation of the upcoming Working Titles issue—SPELL CHECK: Spiritualism, Shamanism, Sorcery & the Reincarnation of the Occult in Dark Times—is not a launch, but a live process. Structured as a prelaunch salon, the event introduces the authors and their contributions-in-progress to the public in three one-hour panel sessions. These panels bring contributors into critical dialogue with one another, emphasizing the journal’s core values: appreciation of peer culture, praxis, and the generative “search” at the heart of practice-based research.

Working Titles is a platform where artistic research unfolds in public, and the process matters as much as the outcome. This presentation reflects that ethos through live peer-review: a discursive, open exchange that resists closure and embraces friction.

A century after the so-called Age of Reason and two after the last European witch burning, rationality itself seems under siege. Self-declared shamans have stormed the US Capitol, scientists face death threats for ideas previously widely accepted & many feel targeted by “witch hunts” for their political or intellectual beliefs. In a time of crisis, change & global diaspora, many have turned to magic as part of what they see as a practice of resistance & care—reclaiming heritage, queering belief systems, and unsettling colonial cosmologies. Others decry these turns as “woo” or dangerous mystifications. Join us as we navigate this terrain together, in search, in practice.

We don’t Proofread, We Spell Check: Working Titles #3 Prelaunch Salon We don’t Proofread, We Spell Check: Working Titles #3 Prelaunch Salon

This prelaunch salon of the upcoming Working Titles issue—SPELL CHECK—brings artists and researchers into live, peer-reviewed dialogue. Across three panel sessions, contributors explore mysticism, ritual, and critical making in times of crisis. Where belief meets method and practice becomes research, we ask: can the mystical be critical—or is it just an escape? Join us as we explore and challenge this charged terrain.
