Project description
Alongside the architectural preservation of monuments, the analysis of the city and its urban historical contexts forms a central component of the scientific and institutional work of heritage conservation. Urban heritage conservation became established in the 1970s, when large-scale demolitions of entire historic neighbourhoods and extensive building activity led to the loss of historically inherited urban design contexts. The starting point is the understanding that buildings are interrelated and therefore the respective spatial context plays an important role when considering both individual monuments and historically grown environments.
Urban heritage conservation is characterised not only by a specific set of instruments, but also by an analytical view that focuses the evaluation and valorisation of structural objects and contexts of the past on questions of the urban present and future.
In the seminar "City as Monument", students in their 2nd semester of Bachelor Urban Studies have been working on various aspects and methods of urban monument preservation using examples of Weimar's urban heritage. In addition to a brochure that is still being produced, the results of the analyses have been translated into 5-minute short films that can be viewed online during the Summaery.
