Project description
The exhibition of the scientific module "Designing the Everyday: Welcome to the Magic of the Ordinary" focuses on a selection of "everyday designs". In doing so, various objects are marked in their everyday context in and around the Van de Velde Building, as well as further objects are re-located in partly unusual contexts. In addition, these objects will be completed with information on their associated aesthetic and functional characteristics in order to make the discussions and findings from the seminar accessible to experience.
In the scientific module, the underlying assumption was that everything that surrounds us today is designed in some way and affects us in different ways. However, many of these "everyday designs" often elude our immediate awareness, in that either the circumstances of their creation, production, and use are unclear, or they act quasi-invisibly through their inconspicuous - and according to Jasper Morrison "supernormal" - appearance. Accordingly, the seminar focused on a fundamental approach that dealt primarily with (often unauthorized) everyday designs and placed them in the context of specific design positions, processes, and practices. In this way, the seminar allowed students to classify and evaluate key objects of everyday design, as well as their meaning and embedding in overarching contexts of ideas and contemporary history.
