Project description
The excessive use of environmentally harmful building materials such as reinforced concrete causes considerable environmental problems that urgently need to be contained against the backdrop of the climate crisis. Straw as a building material offers a very good alternative in many areas, which can meet the requirements of sustainable construction much better. However, this historic building material still has great potential for optimization if it is to keep pace with conventional building materials.
The StrawLab seminar therefore focused on optimizing straw as a building material. The participating students experimented directly with the material in order to develop a new building material from it. The resulting test specimens were then jointly subjected to real compression tests, which provided information on the respective load-bearing capacity and thus also statements on the suitability as a building material.
