Project description
Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIV) essentially consist of motions induced on structures interacting with an external fluid such as wind, producing periodic irregularities on the flow, therefore generating undesired vibrations on the construction.
When this takes place in bridges, for example, this could lead to fatigue problems which could reduce the total lifespan of the structure, serviceability issues like cracks, interruptions of traffic, or even disruption during the construction process. The latter happened in our case study: The Alconétar Bridge in Spain.
Our project consisted of modeling the VIV episode that took place in Alconétar to understand its critical wind velocity and magnitude of the vertical displacements. Then, exploring different types of solutions, we could analyze the reductions of these effects. Simulations of the bridge were performed with the addition of damping elements (TMDs), which are applied to reduce the vibrations of structures. Another solution was the implementation of an Artificial Intelligence Model which could estimate damping values hence reducing the necessary number of simulations.
The objective of presenting this project in the Summaery 2021 is to explain a technical civil engineering subject in a simplified manner, making the presentation as accessible as possible to students or spectators of all fields of study.
