Project description

A self-sufficient pop-up kitchen functioning outdoors and made for communities. With the kitchen workshop, we create a social center: Cooking and eating becomes a collective experience. The process, from the seeds of a plant to a shared meal, serves as a symbol of the design. To raise awareness of the food value chain, each module is dedicated to one processing step: harvesting, washing, chopping, cooking and composting. The kitchen's surfaces are used as worktops during the act of cooking and are turned into tabletops for the shared meal. Both of these collaborative acts are stimulating social encounters.

On a social level, we believe that establishing a common good is maximizing participation in the cycle of a meal and is transferring knowledge by cooking together. On a sustainable level, reclaiming the natural cycle of food is supporting local and self-sufficient food production, leading to saving ressources. On a formative level, we are providing a neutral base for food-related experiments, making accessible a flexible hardware to promote networking and offering dishes that are consistent with a sustainable and nutritious lifestyle.

In summer 2020, the workshop kitchen was integrated into collaborating communities. First, mahl x zeit was used during a residency at the "Open Factory im Eiermannbau". The workshop kitchen was then tested by the Weimar housing cooporation "Wohnprojekt Ro70". At the "summaery2021", we offer 100 bites of a simple meal.
