Teaching award 2018 - Special Award Interdisciplinarity | Film by Jessica Krecisz and Jano Kaltenbach
Nominees in the «Sonderpreis Interdisziplinarität» (Special Award Interdisciplinarity) category introduce themselves: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Eckhard Kraft and Prof. Elizabeth Bachhuber explain what they had to consider when planning the joint courses «Das Müllprojekt: Materielle Manifestationen» (The Garbage Project: Material Manifestations) and «Zeichenkurs: Wahrnehmungsübungen» (Drawing course: perception exercises). Meike Langer reports on a surprising moment in her course «Messestand der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar bei der Leipziger Buchmesse» (Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s stand at Leipzig Book Fair). Gianluca Pandolfo summarises with students what participants have retained following «Loading Screens – A practical journey into game development», a course with Prof. Wolfgang Kissel and Prof. Dr. Charles Wüthrich.

Blitzlicht: Seeking Unseen | Yağmur Ruzgar
Most of us live in cities, and we almost never leave. However, do we really pay attention to our environment? Do the streets that we pass by every day only function as bridges taking us from A to B? This Blitzlicht presentation focuses on the planning process for a course that enables students to see the details in urban spaces, to do research on them, and to come up with potentially inspiring outcomes in an interdisciplinary context.

The medieval cathedral was a paragon to the Bauhaus and a metaphor for art and design of the modern era. In the «Kathedrale» (Cathedral) seminar students of Architecture, Fine Art, Urbanism and Media Studies analysed this multifaceted and contradictory phenomenon in its functions, manifestations, forms and media environments. This Blitzlicht presentation illustrates the methodological challenges of such a transdisciplinary teaching project.

With the vision of implementing concrete and realistic ideas to promote sustainable mobility on the University campus and in the city of Weimar within one semester, 21 students from across all four faculties worked together on eight interdisciplinary projects. This also meant that the students got to know their university from completely new perspectives. In this Blitzlicht presentation the student reports on what challenges the organisation of such a complex teaching project poses.

Bauhaus.Semester Evaluation Results | Dr. Andreas Mai
Studying and teaching «differently» – this was the express appeal of the past «Bauhaus.Semester». How did teachers and students assess the experiences gained? What opportunities did the multidisciplinary courses organised by students provide for our University? In order to find the answers to these questions and to acquire additional inspiration for further thinking in conceptual terms, the «Bauhaus.Semester» as an overall concept was evaluated in the form of an online questionnaire.

What could experimental courses which equip our students with the ability to see the bigger picture and think outside the box look like - even after «Bauhaus.Semester»? In the winter semester 2019/20 the next steps will be tested with the «Bauhaus.Module» format.

Develop Gender and Diversity Competence: Free Online Toolbox | Melanie Bittner, Freie Universität Berlin
How can you methodically design teaching-learning settings in order to activate different students and avoid discrimination? How do you avoid linguistic stereotypes and promote a constructive discussion culture? Become familiarised with the «Gender and diversity in teaching toolbox» of Freie Universität Berlin. The toolbox contains information, suggestions and free material on these and other questions concerning gender and diversity awareness in university teaching.

Creating Synergies from Differences: Intercultural Learning | Franziska Kindmann, Dezernat Internationale Beziehungen
Intercultural sensitisation helps to make you aware of your own behaviour and to gain new perspectives on the behaviour of others. In this workshop you can gain an insight into the practice of intercultural learning and therefore into the «Intercultural competence» project for teachers and students of the International Office.

How to be cool with Moodle: Interactive Teaching Content with H5P | Dominic Dives, eLab
Moodle is more than just online storage - as is shown with open source plugin H5P. With the help of H5P it is easy to design your own interactive teaching content. In this workshop learn how to create annotated videos and your own quiz, and how to embed these in the Moodle teaching area. Also gain an insight into the portfolio of eLabs as well as further training opportunities within the scope of eTEACH.

Focused and Stress Free: Mindfulness Training | Prof. Dr. Mike Sandbothe, Thüringer Modellprojekt Achtsame Hochschule in der Digitalen Gesellschaft
Today, students have to deal with a high level of stress. This is a challenge which universities respond to with mindfulness in the sense of their remit for personal development. The «Mindfulness Based Student Training» (MBST) makes the topic of stress more tangible for students. In this workshop learn about these methods as a form of cognitive practice and the training on focusing the mind complete with meditative processes.

The 60-minute idea workshops in small groups offer an opportunity to develop ideas further with other interested parties, and find suitable partners for establishing collaborations. All idea workshops will take place in the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Main Building.

Bauhaus-Universität: Weimar as a Place for the Socio-political | Mats Werchohlad
IDEA: Against the threatening backdrop of climate change, the digital revolution, migration and housing shortages, nationalist forces have sparked a new dimension of mistrust and xenophobia in our society. The frequently discussed question “How political is the Bauhaus?” reflects the search for an answer to these pressing challenges with recourse to history but also by reflecting on our own action in the context of the centenary activities. A glance at Weimar shows that the historic Bauhaus was closely interwoven into the local fabric of the city, was active, wanted to create and develop but did also, however, polarise and differentiate itself. If, as the University, we critically confront this legacy today and try to derive a future-orientated responsibility from this, we must deal with where and how this potential can unfold.

METHOD: In preparation for the Tag der Lehre idea workshop, a survey of a diverse range of stakeholders, initiatives and institutions which are socio-politically active in Weimar has been conducted. Presentation of the findings is intended to provide a basis for discussion, an external perspective as well as points of reference for the following questions: In which places can university resources be utilised? Which structures and what collaboration are required for this? And how, as a society, do we want to change?

Bauhaus.Digital.Studies | Dr. Simon Frisch, Dr. Ulrike Kuch, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Jan Willmann
IDEA: Digitalisation affects virtually all areas of life and work in our society. It has changed not only the way in which we communicate and consume but also directly intervenes in creative and material practices and therefore changes artistic, creative and constructive disciplines “from the inside”. In order to penetrate (and shape) such a profound change and, in particular, its impact on the environment in which we live, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar intends to design a study focus «Bauhaus.Digital.Studies». The programme intends to convey new (digital) skills and fields of expertise and knowledge, and bring together existing areas of focus across disciplines.

METHOD: On Tag der Lehre, the aim is to collate and discuss fundamental positions and perspectives for developing such an interdisciplinary and future-orientated digital programme. Participants from across all faculties and status groups will also discuss the question of relevance of such a study programme, the possible teaching content and the connection between research and teaching, the implementation of political aspects in the digital realm and the ability to integrate such a programme into existing courses at the University.

Student-organised teaching/learning Projects | Susann Hippler
IDEA: In the Bauhaus.Semester 2018/19, students of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar organised their own courses. Evaluation results show that participation in the courses as well as implementation as student-led teaching was enriching for all involved. On the basis of these positive experiences, the University Management Team has decided to support student-organised teaching/learning projects in future.

METHOD: The idea workshop is a platform to exchange experiences of student teachers and their mentors concerning the challenges of such a project. Students interested in these projects have the opportunity to ask specific questions, to find out about financing possibilities and to learn about the experiences of others. The idea workshop offers the opportunity to discuss ideas for student-organised teaching/learning projects in winter semester 2019/20.

Competitiveness through good teaching | Prof. Dr.-Ing. Conrad Völker, Yvonne Puschatzki
IDEA: The idea workshop would like to make a contribution  to agreeing objectives for good teaching at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, and to think together about how the activities of the University as a place of study and learning can be increased.

METHOD: Findings from an analysis of competitiveness of the Faculty of Civil Engineering conducted by students in the winter semester will be used as an entry point to the discussion. The student authors of the study provide inspiration for how individual perspectives, shaped by internal information, on the teaching and courses on offer can be aligned with insights into representative surveys, and that it is possible to take on an external perspective.

Bauhaus.Week | Dr. Simon Frisch, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Jan Willmann
IDEA: Bauhaus.Week supplements the courses offered at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in a new format. It takes place once a year and focuses on the collective development of new positions and perspectives on topics which are current and of societal relevance. The interdisciplinary focus makes it possible, through a change in content, methods and teachers, to look beyond the boundaries of one’s own subject area and to explore new future-orientated formats and methods. At the same time, the Bauhaus.Week is intended to provide optimal conditions for continued teaching and research cooperations. Overall the Bauhaus.Week not only strengthens the profile of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar as an innovative, open and simultaneously diverse institution but also promotes the University’s self-conception and (transdisciplinary) exchange between students and teachers.

METHOD: In the idea workshop fundamental ideas and concepts for a possible «Bauhaus.Week» will be generated. Firstly, initial fundamental ideas relating to this concept will be represented. This is followed by subsequently establishing issues and places for a potential «Bauhaus.Week». Then possible cross-faculty formats, interfaces and cooperations will be discussed.

Learning Workshop | Susann Hippler, Prof. Nathalie Singer
IDEA: To further strengthen teaching, life-long learning and support of young talent, the concept of a «Learning Lan» will be discussed at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. This «Learning Lab» is to provide a shared space for students and teachers across all faculties for a broad variety of activities relating to universal learning.

METHOD: The aim of the workshop is to collect ideas on what the «Learning Lab» should actually «be able to do», what equipment it needs and which formats it would suit. As an introduction, examples from other, in some cases international, universities will be introduced briefly. Preexisting and newly developed ideas will be collected and discussed.
