Project description

The medieval cathedral, of all places, is the Bauhaus model and metaphor for art and modern design: craftsmen and artists are to unite in a new building hut, just as all the stands and strata once gathered for worship in the cathedral. The Middle Ages as a blueprint for modernity?

The fascination for the cathedral and its time has a long history: the Romantics paint pictures and tell stories of noble knights, jugglers, farmers, castles and beautiful Fräuleins, the Expressionists at the beginning of the 20th century are inspired by the expressive forms of medieval art. Picture books and children's rooms are populated by castles and knights, the legends of Arthur, Lancelot etc. are filmed. In our time, the Middle Ages can be found everywhere: from medieval markets to the series "Game of Thrones", from Umberto Eco, Ken Follet, to computer games. But also great national exhibitions and historiography testify a boom of a fascination of the time of the cathedrals.

The cathedral is our starting point and centre for our exhibits. Thus the cathedral becomes visible as a multi-layered, rich and extremely contradictory phenomenon, which also historically has many different functions, appearances, forms and media environments.
