Project description
Structural Soundscapes was the 4th ProTELC Science Camp at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (22 September – 1 October 2025). This eight-day camp for master's students combined structural engineering, dynamics and acoustics to explore how buildings respond to vibration — especially during earthquakes — and how that motion can be made audible. In interdisciplinary teams, participants built small modular structures, instrumented them with accelerometers, and studied their dynamic behaviour on shaking tables. Using a digital twin (OpenSees), they modelled and calibrated their structures and deliberately "tuned" their natural frequencies. Through sonification, vibration signals were mapped into the audible range — »Can you hear your structure?« — culminating in a collective »orchestra« of tuned structures. Guest lectures and excursions with research and industry partners from across Thuringia and abroad complemented the hands-on work.
