Project description
The Bauhaus-Universität looks back on a rich history that is closely intertwined with the history of the city of Weimar. Its architectural diversity ranges from simple barns to stately 19th-century city mansions, the famous van de Velde buildings, and outstanding postwar structures from the GDR era, all the way to contemporary experimental architecture. And in every era, members of the university community have been actively involved in the architectural development.
This makes it all the more surprising that there is still no architectural guidebook that chronicles the university’s complex (architectural) history. We wanted to change that, so in the summer semester of 2025, students from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, under the guidance of the Chair of Heritage Conservation and Architectural History, conducted an in-depth study of the approximately 50 properties scattered throughout the city. They researched archives, took photographs and made sketches, wrote texts, and developed layout proposals.
We are currently working on publishing our architecture guide, which is scheduled to be released in October 2026. In order to produce this as a student-led, non-commercial in-house project, we rely on financial support. Your contribution will make it possible for us to produce our architecture guide in-house and will help highlight the university’s architectural heritage beyond the famous Bauhaus.
