Project description

"Unglued timber constructions" are of interest because of the following energy- and material-saving measures:

1. Short, rectangular timber pieces minimize manufacturing effort and transport distances. Local carpenters process material on site – without an industrial intermediate step.

2. Whole tree trunks used as load-bearing components make full structural use of the trunk's cross-section. No offcuts, no material loss.

3. Glue-free joints can be undone again. The components remain reusable.

 

In the Schwarza valley of the Thuringian Forest, hall buildings with different programs are being designed on three sites. The hall typology suits unglued timber constructions due to its span, single storey, and correspondingly low fire-safety requirements: a forest seed kiln, a sawmill hall, and a swimming hall. The Thuringian Forest is damaged by bark-beetle infestation and forced clear-cutting; the shift to more climate-resilient mixed forests requires human intervention. The designs address this necessary change programmatically and architecturally. The seed kiln stands for reforestation, the sawmill for upgrading the timber-processing chain, the pool for an experienceable building culture in reversible timber construction.

Structural engineer Hendrik Linder (BTU Cottbus) offered an accompanying seminar. First, joints from reference projects were calculated, then the self-designed joint. The exhibition shows the focus on the disassemblability of the construction method.
