Project description
The Interface Design students show works, processes, and research developed during the Summer Semester 2026.
In Batteries Not Included – Solar Energy as Artistic Material, students explored renewable energy as a medium for artistic experimentation. Focusing on solar power, they designed reactive and interactive objects powered exclusively by sunlight. These self-sufficient artefacts generate unpredictable visual and sonic behaviors, highlighting autonomy, complexity, and the independent life of things.
The Open Project Module encouraged students to initiate and develop their own projects. Outcomes ranged from amplified screaming to drive stepper motors and interactive autonomous everyday objects to fart-sensing feminist interventions and laser-engraved slate photography.
Physical Computing: Batteries Not Included offered a hands-on introduction to interactive systems that sense and respond to their environment, with a particular emphasis on energy harvesting in electronic and interactive artworks.
3D-Print Lab 101 provided insight into the full 3D-printing workflow, from digital modeling and prototyping to preparing objects for production and selecting suitable materials.
In Sculpting with Printed Circuit Spaces, students dug deep into the materialities, conventions, energy regimes, and design rules embedded in printed circuit boards. Through experimentation, we explored ways to open up, understand, challenge, and expand them, to express spatialized artistic gestures.
