Project description
Students Organize a Decolonial City Tour
Decolonize Weimar is a project developed by students in the Media Culture program at Bauhaus University Weimar. Through this initiative, we join numerous efforts dedicated to postcolonial remembrance that have emerged in cities such as Berlin, Erfurt, and Jena, where local urban histories are being reexamined and retold.
In some cities, these initiatives have sparked broad public debates about memory and commemoration in urban spaces. In others, they have led to the creation of new sites of remembrance. In Weimar, too, a city marked by many layers of historical memory, not all stories have yet been told.
The city tour aims to introduce and discuss Weimar’s colonial sites and histories. In doing so, it seeks to foster debate about how colonial history can be researched, communicated, and critically remembered. The tour highlights that colonialism was carried out both by Germany as a state and by individual actors such as researchers, explorers, and merchants. Its impacts were profound even before the 1880s and continue to shape the present day. The term “decolonize” reflects the idea that the practices, ways of thinking, and consequences of colonialism do not belong solely to a closed chapter of history but remain relevant today.
