Project description
The Digital Hub focuses on the relationship between (media) technology and practices of social imagination, particularly with regard to the transformation of collective imaginaries through algorithms and virtual spaces. In close collaboration with computer science, the Digital Hub develops technological foundations to explore social imagination using advanced research tools, extending to the further development of Social Virtual Reality (SVR) technologies. In addition, the Digital Hub examines the imaginative potential of media in social, political, and cultural crisis situations. In doing so, it also offers a historical perspective on media-supported and media-driven imagination since the 19th century to reflect on fundamental, epoch-spanning upheavals in the social practice of imagining through media. The Digital Hub views media not merely as socio-technical tools for individual and collective imagination, but as active (co-)shapers of cohesion or division, as creators and stabilizers of group identities, and as producers of social, cultural, and political conflicts in democracies and beyond.
