Project description
The Sendehalle condenses a century of cultural, political, and media history: from the unfinished Nietzsche Memorial of Nazy time to a GDR broadcasting center, and technoparty site Funkhaus.
Since spring 2026, an interdisciplinary group of researchers and artists from Bauhaus-Universität has been investigating the Sendehalle as a site where cultural politics, media, architecture, and informal urban practices intersect. Conceived as an open research environment, the project combines archival, museum, and published materials with artistic interpretation and historical inquiry.
During summaery2026, the laboratory, located in the former director’s offices of the radio station, will present the first results of this work. Among the selected focal points are the changing afterlives of Nietzsche’s death mask, the journey of a Dionysus sculpture from Rome to Weimar in 1944, radio broadcasting practices during the GDR era, and traces of the informal techno culture of the 1990s and 2000s. These individual stories serve as entry points into broader questions of memory, media, architecture, and urban transformation.
At the same time, the Sendehalle will temporarily resume its original function as a broadcasting site: a live radio transmission will be broadcast from the building for the first time in twenty-five years.
