Project description

The consequences of the wars and the scientific, technological, and social transformations of the early twentieth century led to a fundamental reassessment of the human body. Prostheses, which became visible parts of the body for millions of people as a result of injuries and amputations, turned hybrid forms of human and machine into a social reality. At the same time, artists, scientists, and engineers envisioned futures in which organism and mechanism would increasingly merge. Automatons, robots, and technologically enhanced bodies evoked ambivalent responses, oscillating between fascination and fear, hope and unease.

The installation explores these early conceptions of the human–machine hybrid through an archive, a laboratory table, and a cartographic overview. It presents examples from art, science, theatre, and film of the 1910s and 1920s, including avant-garde projects, concepts of biomechanical bodies, and visions of robots and automatons.

The project was developed as part of the Bauhaus.Module From Archive to Exhibition: Curating the Uncanny Body (Winter Semester 2025/26). It was created by a group of students from the Faculties of Fine Art, Media, and Architecture.
