Project description
What happens when you talk to someone, but in a different body?
In this demo, you step into virtual reality and communicate through an avatar that looks and sounds different from you: a different gender, a different form, and a voice transformed in real time to match. Your conversation partner experiences the same.
Research shows that avatars are more than digital shells. The body we inhabit in virtual space shapes how we behave and how we perceive ourselves, a phenomenon known as the Proteus Effect. Our project VECo (Virtual Embodiment and Communication) builds an experimental platform to study exactly this: How does inhabiting a different body change the way we present ourselves? How do others respond to us?
Today, you can try it yourself: put on a headset, step into a different body, and have a conversation.
