Project description

My thesis project is devoted to a personal archive and to the question: What remains when the people who kept things disappear? Which stories are held within it, and how do you keep such an archive alive or transform it?

The starting point is a set of ORWO magnetic tapes from my grandparents' estate, kept for decades and long unheard. They carry voices, sound, and the traces of a story that links two Thuringian villages — bound together by a forced resettlement from the border zone of the former GDR. And among them, unexpectedly: four minutes of my own voice as a child.

I returned to the villages, spoke with people of that time, and recorded parts of these conversations onto tape — experimentally joined with the old recordings, as a bridge between then and now.

From the magnetic tape itself, objects emerged: crocheted and knitted.
