Project description
Building with weak timber has great potential, because despite its strength, it is usually only used thermally or for wood fibre production due to its small diameter. We want to demonstrate this potential in a joint design and construction seminar and present it to the public at X-Stahl.
In order to be able to utilise weak timber in spatial structures, the Chair of Constructive Design and Structural Design has developed a modular node for the construction of circular trusses made of round timber. This is to be trialled at Summaery 2025 in a larger load-bearing structure in X-steel on a scale of 1:1. To this end, the course participants will first develop their own load-bearing structure designs using these nodes on a 1:10 scale, which we will then test until they fail. Part of the concept will also be to consider how the load-bearing capacity of the structure can be visualised and activated in a playful way.
Following the design phase, one of the structural designs will be realised together on a 1:1 scale in X-steel, with the timber node connection being made using a screw connection that allows for quick assembly. In the course, students learn the basics of woodworking, load-bearing principles of spatial trusses and AR-supported woodworking and assembly in a playful and applied way.
