Project description

This semester, students design a shared mixed reality (MR) house in which hacked wooden furniture serves as portals to immersive worlds. Inspired by historic design ideas like the Frankfurter Küche, the project reimagines everyday rituals—cooking, cleaning, bathing, brushing teeth—as playful, performative acts that ground us in the here and now. Each piece of furniture invites specific physical interaction, turning routine activities into multi-sensory experiences that heighten our sense of presence. Working in pairs, students design a piece of furniture that becomes part of the collective MR house. They work with found or second-hand pieces—our ”physical assets”—and expand them both physically and virtually. Using digital scans, 3D-printed elements, and immersive extensions in virtual reality (VR), they further develop the history, functionality, and form of the objects. Tools such as Rhino, Blender, Gravity Sketch, and Unity 3D allow these modified objects to merge with a corresponding immersive digital world, creating the MR house—a speculative network of embodied experiences.
