Project description
The Walking Lab Weimar explores walking as a form of creative resistance and social engagement through artistic research. Inspired by Stephanie Springgay’s and Sarah E. Truman’s WalkingLab, the seminar embraced a relational, embodied, and collaborative approach to walking methodologies. The exhibition showcases works by students who participated in the seminar, inspired by writings by Tim Ingold, Helmi Järviluoma, and Lucius Burckhardt, among others, and field experiments by PhD students Carlina Rossée and Eleftherios Krysalis. Integrating deep-reading discussions with 3-6 hour walks, the seminar delved into themes of embodiment, more-than-human walking, and the interplay between urban and rural landscapes. We explored seemingly natural and human-made environments, nuclear heritage sites, and the sonic dimensions of walking. We reflected on walking as a political act, with landscapes viewed as palimpsests holding layers of history and meaning. The works developed for Summaery reflect diverse approaches to walking as a medium for artistic expression and social critique. Texts, drawings, live performances, and instructional pieces illustrate the multifaceted nature of walking. Projects include seismographic drawings, choreographed walks, decolonial practices, power dynamics, and a scavenger hunt.Walking Lab Weimar invites viewers to see walking as a method of artistic inquiry and engagement, highlighting its power for reflection, resistance, and connection.
