Project description
Görlitz on the Lusatian Neisse is a member of the Neisse Euroregion and has formed a European town with Zgorzelec since 1998. Görlitz was almost completely spared from destruction in World War II and boasts an impressive historic old town with elaborately restored buildings from the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Art Nouveau periods. Görlitz is considered an architectural Gesamtkunstwerk and the largest contiguous monument area in Germany, with numerous squares and winding alleys. The city became the most important trading city between Erfurt and Wrocław from the 12th century onwards, thanks to its burgeoning trade and a flourishing cloth production, located on the historic long-distance trade route "Via Regia".
The historic old town of Görlitz was explored by students as a study object for training spatial perception and practicing different freehand representation techniques. The program included a guided tour of the city and visits to important objects in the old town with a monument conservator and art historian. The students prepared profiles of selected drawing objects in teams.
