Project description
This semester we are looking at an unusual area in Weimar. For once, we're not talking about a classic Bauhaus heritage site, but an ordinary industrial estate - but with great views! It is located in the west of Weimar between the Schwanseestraße street and Asbach, behind the bridge to Weimar-West: a place that hardly anyone knows. The city of Weimar has had its eye on the area for some time and has now offered it to the Chair of urban design as a testing ground for student projects.
The qualities are so varied, that they have to be numbered:
1. many plots lie fallow, are undeveloped or unused.
2. the Schwanseestraße in front, the Asbach behind: the stream is channelled and cannot be seen. The narrow river is to be renaturalised and a green belt can be created that stretches from the Weimarhalle via the outdoor pool and the stadium to the edge of the town.
3. in the middle is a place that some students may be familiar with: the Gaswerk Weimar, a cultural centre in old industrial halls that has been known in the city for over 20 years for its concerts, exhibitions and parties.
4 According to the city's initial ideas, a mixed residential and commercial neighbourhood is to be developed. This mix corresponds to an urban model that has has been developed in the recent years: the "productive city".
5 An inconspicuous path leads to Weimar-West, the prefabricated housing estate that was never really connected to the city.
