International »Erinnern gestalten.« Conference Examines How and Where Medical Crimes Committed Under National Socialism Are Remembered

»Erinnern gestalten. Orte der NS-Medizinverbrechen« Conference brings together researchers from various fields at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar to approach topics of Nazi medical crimes, Nazi-era healthcare polices, and the built environment under National Socialist rule. Participants will be asked how this knowledge can be made accessible while also looking at contemporary forms of commemoration and remembrance. The conference is a joint event between the »Geschichte der Bauhausstraße 11« research project at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the »Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Thüringen«.

30 September 2022 marks the 84th anniversary of the day that the former German Reich revoked the medical licences of Jewish doctors. The »Erinnern gestalten. Orte der NS-Medizinverbrechen« Conference is intended to commemorate this injustice committed in the name of the National Socialist medical profession and healthcare policy. The conference will be a gathering of media academics, (medical) historians, artists and those whose work involves the mediation of history and politics of remembrance in the context of Nazi crimes in healthcare policies. The question of what can be understood through re-examination and which media formats should be (further) developed will be asked from various perspectives with the aim of continuing the discourse of remembrance that began at specific locations (for example, the former  »Thüringer Ärztehaus« in Weimar and the former » Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut für Anthropologie, menschliche Erblehre und Eugenik« in Berlin-Dahlem) and anchoring it in the long term collective memory.

The building at Bauhausstraße 11 in Weimar, home to the Faculty of Media since 1997, is the starting point for dealing with former sites of Nazi atrocities. The building is considered to be one of the first National Socialist administrative buildings in Weimar. The »Geschichte der Bauhausstraße 11« research and mediation project is currently researching the history of the building.

The event is organised by the »Geschichte der Bauhausstraße 11« research project (funded by the »Kassenärztliche Vereinigung Thüringen«) together with the »Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Thüringen«.
