Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Celebrates Night of Writing’s Tenth Anniversary
Each year in June, those interested in writing come together in the University Library to talk with experts about research, reading experiences, and writer’s block. With a new name and fresh design, this year’s »Night of Writing« is looking back at the past ten years and over 300 events. The tenth Night of Writing at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will be held on 13 June from 6 pm to midnight under the slogan »Rewind« and will focus on failure as part of the writing process. The event us free of charge and university members and guests are warmly invited to join.
The event kicks off with an opening address by University President Prof. Peter Benz and award-winning author Nancy Hünger, alumna of the »Freie Kunst« programme at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and Director of the University of Tübingen’s »Studio Literatur und Theater«. From her keynote speech »Einerlei. Wieder versuchen. Wieder scheitern. Besser scheitern. Eine Versuchsanordnung«, she will examine the ordinary, productive and necessary aspect of failure in writing. The lecture and following discussion between Dr. Manuela Klaut, Department of Art and Cultural History, and Nancy Hünger will be simultaneously interpreted into English using AI technology.
This will be followed by the slam, »Erfolgreich scheitern: Kein Ergebnis ist auch ein Ergebnis«. A number of academics will speak about their own personal experiences with failure, incorporating a touch of humour. New to the event this year are workshops on screenwriting, dealing with »false friends« in English and German, and Psychadelic literature. The writing workshops »Word’s don’t come easy – Künstler*innen schreiben« and »Zukünfte schreiben mit KI« will offer active writing, with the later offering the chance to use the AI-supported writing tool »Futuring Machine«, developed in the Bauhaus research workshop, for the first time. Of course, evergreens like »Comma Chameleon« and the guided tour through the otherwise hidden library stacks are not to be missed. The late-night student »Open Mic«, happening for the third time, showcases poetic work.
This year’s event will also be the last opportunity to check out the »Gildenhall 1921–2024: Siedlungskultur am Ruppiner See. Arbeiten Wohnen Leben« exhibition with Michael Siebenbrot. There will also be plenty of other opportunities for exchange, including the PhD meet&greet, where doctoral students and postdocs can discuss their publication experiences, the »Bauhaus Gamesfabrik« stations, the »ILLUMULUS«, as well as two student initiatives: »LUCIA Verlag« and »Schreibhaus«.
The unique atmosphere of Night of Writing will be captured in a special way this year: Three podcast episodes will be recorded live in the foyer with Nancy Hünger and Dr. Simon Frisch, Vice President of Student and Academic Affairs. Additional audio events will be featured in the Audimax, including the newly updated »Barbara Millicent Roberts spielt nicht mehr mit« radio play, which was produced by students and presented to the public for the first time for the »Kulturstadtjahr 1999«.
Refreshments will be provided between events. Due to the limited places, registration for the workshops is recommended. For the full programme and information on how to register, see: www.uni-weimar.de/schreibnacht
