Am Mittwoch, 19. Oktober, 2022 werden von 16 bis 18 Uhr am Internationalen Heritage-Zentrum der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar zwei Neuerscheinungen zur internationalen Baukulturerbe-Forschung sowie eine weitere Publikation zur Altstadterneuerung in Ostdeutschland vorgestellt.

Who among us doesn’t long for a dip in cool, refreshing water on a hot summer’s day? In places where there is no ocean or lake close by, outdoor pools are the place to go. However, you often hear it said that the heating costs are too high, or that it is simply uneconomical to continue operating such pools. Arguments like this were also made in the town of Rippershausen, which is situated among the lush green highlands of the Thuringian Forest and the Rhön Mountains. A local association calling itself »Schwimmbadfreunde« (friends of the swimming pool) took responsibility for the municipal outdoor pool in 2011 and went looking for new ideas. Students from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar developed several relevant proposals. The first part of a covered wooden walkway, also known as a colonnade, has been in place for several weeks. This change will allow the pool to serve as a year-round meeting place.

The international students of the master’s degree programme “Art in Public Space and New Artistic Strategies” are contributing to the »NORDOST SÜDWEST / NORTHEAST SOUTHWEST« art project in an event entitled »DIS/ORIENTING«. This involves the students spending two weeks in Dresden developing artistic works and initiatives dedicated to questions of migration, borders, belonging and traces of post-colonialism and de-colonialism in a complex present.

»Schön, das Audimax mal wieder bis auf den letzten Platz gefüllt zu sehen!« – mit diesen Worten begrüßte Prof. Dr. Jutta Emes, Vorläufige Leiterin der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar und Interimspräsidentin, die über 400 Studierenden, die sich am Mittwochabend, 12. Oktober 2022, zu ihrer Feierlichen Immatrikulation in den größten Hörsaal der Universität eingefunden hatten.

Vier Wochen lang hat die UFA Serial Drama GmbH im Spätsommer an verschiedenen Schauplätzen in Weimar für ihr neues Serienprojekt mit dem Arbeitstitel »Irgendwas mit Medien« gedreht. Viele Hauptszenen des Drehbuches, das den Studienstart eines Erstsemesters in der Medienkunst erzählt, spielen auf dem Campus der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. So filmte das Team unter anderem im Hörsaalgebäude in der Marienstraße, in der Textilwerkstatt, in den Fotowerkstätten in der Amalienstraße, im Studio 1, der Hausknechtstraße und rund um den Van-de-Velde-Bau.

All four faculties at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar have elected new faculty management. The new deans have been appointed by the President and will serve a three-year term at the university until the beginning of the 2025 winter semester.

Unter dem Motto »Wohnen.Arbeiten.Leben« laden die Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, die Klassik Stiftung Weimar, die Weimar GmbH, die IBA Thüringen sowie die Gedenkstätte Buchenwald und das Haus der Weimarer Republik vom 14. bis 16. Oktober 2022 zur diesjährigen Triennale der Moderne. Mit einem vielseitigen Angebot – bestehend aus Ausstellungen und Touren, Workshops, Medieninstallationen und Performances – können interessierte Besucher*innen in der Gründungsstadt des Bauhauses der Geschichte wie auch der Gegenwart der berühmten Hochschule in Weimar nachspüren. Im Fokus steht dabei die Frage, welche Antworten uns die Moderne heute noch bieten kann – angesichts aktueller Herausforderungen wie der Corona-Pandemie, dem Wohnungsmangel oder der Klimakrise.

Im Rahmen der Triennale der Moderne zeigen das Archiv der Moderne und die Professur Denkmalpflege und Baugeschichte eine Ausstellung zur Geschichte der Mensa am Park unter dem Titel »Mensa am Park. Ein Denkmal der späten Moderne«.

The exhibition, conceived by Taishi Watanabe, architect and professor at Waseda University in Tokyo, draws on a study visit at Aalto University from 2019 to 2020 and was already shown in different formats in Helsinki, Berlin and Tokyo.

The film »Two Houses« will be screened at the Bauhaus Museum Weimar on October 14, 2022 as part of the Triennale der Moderne.

On 13 September 2022, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman Zhina (Mahsa) Amini was arrested by the so-called morality police in Tehran for allegedly not wearing her hijab in accordance with government standards. Some days after her arrest, Zhina (Mahsa) Amini died in hospital. Her death was caused by lethal police brutality while in custody.

Zum Beginn des Wintersemesters kehren nicht nur die bereits immatrikulierten Studierenden an die Bauhaus-Universität Weimar zurück, auch zahlreiche Studienanfänger*innen starten mit dem Wintersemester 2022/2023 einen neuen Lebensabschnitt. Mit der Immatrikulationsfeier am Mittwoch, 12. Oktober 2022, ab 17 Uhr, heißt die Universität die neuen Studierenden herzlich willkommen.

Steven Mac Nelly is the new central contact person for sustainability issues at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Since 1 September 2022, he has been responsible for, among other things, assessing the energy footprint of university buildings.

From 2 to 31 October 2022, visitors will be able to explore outstanding final projects from the Product and Industrial Design departments of the most renowned German design and art colleges at the Design Campus of the Dresden State Art Collections (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden [SKD]). Milena Huber, Maren Klamser and Antonia Ney of the Faculty of Art and Design are participating in the exhibition. Artistic staff member Almut Nowack will also be represented with her Master’s thesis from HAWK Hildesheim.

A pilot project affecting Line 3 is being launched in Weimar on 4 October 2022. Instead of the hourly service provided up until now, the city buses between the Main Station and Industrial Area West will operate every 30 minutes. This will be a boon particularly for the students and employees of the Faculty of Media as well as employees of the local businesses, but local residents also stand to benefit. Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, real-estate company Nexus and its tenants Antenne Thüringen, AWO Regionalverband Mitte-West Thüringen and Desay SV Automotive Europe each contributed 50,000 euros to the financing of the project.

Research is an abstract concept. But how does it actually happen? What do researchers experience on the way to new knowledge? What challenges do they have to overcome? With diaries, researchers at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar provide us an insight into their projects – so that others can participate in challenging times and the joy of success.

How can we successfully reduce our energy use, both to save costs and protect the climate by releasing less CO2? These are among the questions that will be asked by 150 guests from science and the industry from across Europe during the BauSIM Conference at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar from 20 to 22 September 2022.

Caroline Ektander, born in Sweden in 1982, has been living in Berlin and working as a curator and architect for over ten years. Her work deals with the complex conditions of environmentally hazardous substances, poisons and toxins. She is currently working on her doctorate at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in the Faculty of Art and Design, focussing on the restoration of contaminated sites in Bitterfeld-Wolfen. In addition to this, she will be artistically exploring the contaminated ground water at the chemical site through support from the university’s Kreativfonds. Science editor Stephanie Waske asked Ektander about the context of this unusual research field.

A new subject area was launched on 1 September in the Produktdesign (Product Design) degree programme at the Faculty of Art and Design: »Emerging Technologies and Design«. Dr. Thomas Pearce was appointed to the newly created tenure track junior professor position. What does this title mean and how does this >newbie< intend to shape the field in the Produktdesign (Product Design) degree programme?
