»nova space« presents its new exhibition »Wo ist der Morgen, den wir gestern sahen?« (Where is the tomorrow we saw yesterday)
The university gallery »nova space« of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar invites you to the opening of the exhibition »Wo ist der Morgen, den wir gestern sahen?« on Thursday, August 22, 2024, from 4 pm. The exhibition shows works by students, university lecturers and external positions that deal with the fragile state of ideas of future visions, the vacuum, the interspaces and -tones, scenarios and snapshots when systems threaten to collapse.
The title of the exhibition, derived from a lyrical text by Heiner Müller, points to the core of the artistic explorations. We are currently experiencing a wavering of the democratic foundations, a tipping point of liberal values and an enormous social disagreement about yesterday, today and tomorrow. The artistic contributions on display serve as catalysts for critical thinking.
In sculptural, filmic and performative contributions, the uncertain conditions are reflected materially and ideally: in ruinous architectures, porous structures, melting points and moments of disruption. In these works, the polyphonic perspectives of a young generation become visible, raising questions about democracy, Western and Eastern European identity, the consequences of reunification and social dissonances.
The exhibition takes Shelly Silver's 1994 documentary »Former East/Former West« as its starting point, in which former West and East Germans are asked about their perceptions of reunification, democracy and the future. The current context and the political climate in Germany can be reflected anew on the basis of questions about the future at that time. The photographic works and sculptures by Berlin-based artist Eric Meier also draw a line between past narratives and the present by creating new surfaces for reflection from dilapidated architectural elements and melted glass objects. Christian Andrés Parra Sánchez's work uses an ephemeral sculpture to raise questions about the culture of hospitality in this country and addresses what it means to have access to social systems. Thai Tai Pham's film essay portrays an intimate image of his mother, who came to the GDR as a Vietnamese contract worker and was once again exposed to vague prospects for the future during the coronavirus pandemic. Rio Usui dedicates her contribution to the sci-fi film character Godzilla and derives a personal creature from it, which functions as a metaphor for overcoming crises and the forthcoming new beginning.
The exhibition is part of the program of Kunstfest Weimar 2024. The accompanying program of the exhibition will be available on the gallery's website at www.uni-weimar.de/university-gallery.
