Learn German, Work Creatively, Gain International Perspectives: The Bauhaus Summer School 2026 Kicks Off in Weimar

The popular »Deutsch in Weimar« intensive course kicks things off: Nearly 140 participants spend around a month in Weimar improving their German and learning about everyday university life.

The high level of international interest is reflected in the available funding: 45 participants will be receiving full scholarships from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). An additional 35 international students from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will receive support as part of the »Bauhaus Navigator Funding« programme.

A special programme is also aimed at the next generation of academics: Twelve pupils from six countries will be taking part in the Summer School through the DAAD’s BIDS scholarship programme. These pupils have already studied German intensively in their home countries and are now being given the opportunity to experience studying at a German university. 

The second part of the Bauhaus Summer School begins on 15 August: Around 120 participants will participate in six specialist courses in the disciplines of architecture, urban studies, as well as art and design, where they will develop new perspectives and bring creative ideas to life. The learning experience extends beyond the classroom, as Weimar itself becomes a space for learning and experiencing. Participants in the »Documentary Storytelling«, for example, will be joining the »FröHlich-Festival« and documenting the stories and encounters around this cultural event.

To mark the anniversary of the Weimar Triangle, as special course has been added to this year’s programme: Supported by the Thüringer Staatskanzlei (Thuringian State Chancellery), »Europa erzählen: Künstlerische Positionen zwischen Konflikt und Verantwortung« explores how polarisation, competing realities, and social tensions influence the work of artists and those working in the cultural sector. 

Learning, Culture, and Encounters

In addition to the courses, the Bauhaus Summer School also offers numerous opportunities to discover Weimar and central Germany. Participants can expect a varied programme of accompanying events, including city tours, excursions, sporting activities, and evening social events. Whether they decide to follow in the footsteps of European royal and princely houses in Gotha, stroll across the historic Krämerbrücke in Erfurt, or take a boat trip through Leipzig – the Summer School gives participants the chance for encounters, new friendships, and unforgettable experiences. Alongside academic knowledge, students also discover Weimar’s cultural diversity: Thanks to a partnership with the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, students can visit Weimar’s museums and palaces free of charge, allowing them to experience the city’s cultural heritage first hand.

A special highlight is the international dinner on campus at the university. Participants present typical dishes from their home countries and learn about culinary classics from all around the world in a festive atmosphere.

To close off the Bauhaus Summer School, participants present the results of their courses. The final presentation will take place under the slogan »Open Ateliers« on Friday, 28 August. The event kicks off at 2 pm on the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar campus at Geschwister-Scholl-Straße. All interested parties are invited to attend.
