Bauhausstraße 11 Renovations: Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Faculty of Media Temporarily Relocated for Three Years
Bauhausstraße 11 has been home to teaching, research and administration for the Faculty of Media since 1997. Starting in March 2022, an extensive renovation and modernisation project will begin under the management of the property owner, Kassenärztlichen Vereinigung Thüringen (KVT). During the approximately three-year renovation phase, much of the Faculty of Media will be relocated to Schwanseestraße 143.
Preparations for this relocation have been underway for several months. Now, in March 2022, the move has begun: The departments of Media Studies and Computer Science of Media, as well as the Dean’s Office, will relocate to their temporary new workplaces. Offices of more than 80 employees, as well as nine science labs, are currently being emptied. In the first week of March, nearly 1,800 boxes and numerous pieces of furniture will be moved by a transport company to Schwanseestraße. This will allow the Faculty’s 500 students to smoothly transition into the summer semester and continue their studies.
Together, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s Service Centre for Facility Management and the property owner of the former soda factory have converted and modernised the premises at Schwanseestraße143 so that it conforms to the Faculty of Media’s requirements. Suitable seminar rooms, labs, offices and student workspaces are now available across three floors. The light-flooded courtyard is available for faculty member use. In cooperation with the city of Weimar and the Stadtwirtschaft, a bus service expansion is planned. Studierendenwerk Thüringen is looking into providing service at Schwanseestraße 143. Other Schwanseestraße 143 tenants include radio stations Antenne Thüringen and Radio TOP40.
Construction preparation began at Bauhausstraße 11 in September 2021 and work inside the building is set to begin in March 2022. The construction is planned to be completed by 2025. The project includes renovations of restrooms, electrical systems and heating, as well as a large proportion of the building’s flooring. An additional seminar room with space for nearly 100 students is planned for the rear of the building. A lift will make most of the building wheelchair accessible.
