BAUHAUS4EU: European Alliance of Ten Universities Led by the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Given Starting Signal

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, together with nine European partner universities, officially launched its »BAUHAUS4EU« University Alliance on 1 January 2025. The Alliance will be funded by the European Union with a total of 14.4 million euros as part of the ERASMUS+ »European Universities« programme. The goal is to establish a European campus that offers integrated education and research programmes and ensures seamless mobility for over 124,000 students and 10,000 staff members.

The Alliance was formally launched with an opening ceremony on 13 January 2025 hosted by the University of Economics in Katowice. Peter Benz, President of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, attended the event along with other rectors, vice-rectors, chancellors, and members of the project team from Germany, Portugal, Bulgaria, France, Greece, Albania, Italy, and Sweden. From 11 to 14 March 2025, nearly 80 representatives from Alliance universities will meet for the first major working session at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

»We are so excited that the collaborative spirit of the Alliance has been embraced from the get go. The project has been the top priority for university management at all participating universities and has received strong support from teaching staff. This is the best way to take full advantage of the potential of cooperation, ensure our universities are prepared for the future, and truly contribute to the development of education in Europe«, explains Prof. Peter Benz.

»An Alliance for a Better Future«: The slogan of the BAUHAUS4EU University Alliance sends a clear message – working closely together long term on future-focussed topics; developing collaborative teaching, learning, and research; and strengthening the European idea should be the goals. Collaboration between universities and the regional partners is set to be expanded through a joint European campus.

Concrete plans include developing interdisciplinary curricula that focus on sustainability, digitalisation, and innovation in order to prepare students for their careers. Participating universities are also developing flexible degree programmes that include European degrees and micro-certificates. A shared digital platform, the »BAUHAUS4EU Digital Campus«, and the »European Student Card« are intended to facilitate networking within the alliance. All university members will be able to benefit from increased mobility through exchange programmes.

In addition to the ten European partner universities, which will be coordinated by the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in the future, 67 cooperation partners from the community, culture, business, industry, and research are also involved. Although they will not benefit from direct funding, these partners will support the Alliance in collaborative projects.

About BAUHAUS4EU:
The »BAUHAUS4EU« University Alliance network includes numerous countries and regions across Europe. The Alliance is made up of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, the Blekinge Institute of Technology (Sweden), the Polis University (Albania), the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (Portugal), the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy (Bulgaria), the University of Bergamo (Italy), the University of Economics in Katowice (Poland), the Université Lumière Lyon 2 (France), the University of Macedonia (Greece) and the Université de Picardie Jules Verne (France). Together, these partners form the »European University Alliance« with over 124,000 students and 10,000 employees.
