Lecture series »Identität und Erbe« brings Hans Haacke’s »Wir (alle) sind das Volk« art project from documenta 14 to Weimar

To launch the lecture series of the research training group of the same name »Identität und Erbe« (Identity and heritage) art historian and journalist Sarah Alberti, research associate in the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism and member of the research training group, is presenting the art project on 14 May 2019.

»Wir (alle) sind das Volk – We (all) are the people« was German artist Hans Haacke’s contribution for documenta 14. The sentence can be read in Arabic, Bulgarian, German, English, Farsi (DAri), French, Polish, Russian, Croatian, Kurdish, Tigrinya (Eritrea, Ethiopia) and Turkish, and is framed by a rainbow-coloured border. The piece is interpreted against the background of the events of 1989 and 1990 and also as part of Haacke’s complete works. The positioning of the work at the two documenta sites in Athens and Kassel by the artist and curators particularly enhanced the expressiveness of the work in terms of content. The site-specificity in each case emphasises the numerous locations in Germany and abroad in which Haacke’s work has been seen since documenta 14, including at the Molenbeek town hall in Brussels, at S.M.A.K., the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent, Hunter College in New York and at the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center in Ramallah. Since August 2018 it has hung or is hanging, in parallel, at the The Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig, Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, at the market place in Zwickau as well as - since April 2019 – at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

The advertising column on Belvederer Allee in Weimar is currently displaying the Hans Haacke art project – with the title »Wir (alle) sind das Volk« in twelve different languages, framed by a rainbow-coloured border, sending a message of cultural diversity and tolerance.

Speaker Sarah Alberti is a co-initiator of the campaign in Weimar and numerous cities in eastern Germany. Her presentation on 14 May 2019, at 6.30pm, is open to the public and is taking place in Hörsaal D, Marienstraße 13C, 99423 Weimar. All interested persons are warmly invited to attend.
