The Professorship of Experimental Radio and the Goethe Institute initiate Radio Art Residency in Weimar and call for applications from artists

Artists from non-German-speaking countries and without residence in Germany can apply for a three-month residency as part of the »Radio Art Residency« in Weimar. The application period is open until (and including) 31 January 2021. The fellowship is aimed at creative people working within the field of acoustic and time-based arts, such as radio, performance or sound art.

During the three-month residency, future fellows are invited to explore the boundaries of sound and radio art, and to transcend them in interdisciplinary constellations. The residency provides a lively intercultural dialogue with artists, scientists, fellows, as well as students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar. The cultural and classical city of Weimar is another source of inspiration, with its cultural offerings and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Fellows also have the opportunity to gain a deeper insight into and network with the contemporary arts scene in Germany, especially international sound and radio art.

The aim of the fellowship is to promote independent and open-ended artistic work, and to create opportunities to produce new artistic works. The programme encourages artists from a broad range of disciplines to explore the narrative, technical and artistic possibilities of radio as a medium. »Our intention is to specifically promote explorations of radio as an instrument of communication«, says Nathalie Singer, Professor of Experimental Radio at the Faculty of Art and Design, describing the focus of the Art Residency; »From using radio as exhibition space for artistic works to exploring the medium of real-time, the residency offers a wide range of possibilities for shaping artistic practice.«

The residency will be supervised and technically supported by the Professorship. In addition, travel expenses, accommodation and a monthly fellowship payment of € 2,300 are included in the fellowship funded by the Goethe Institute. The results of the residency will be broadcast on Deutschlandfunk Kultur's »Klangkunst« programme. The fellowship also includes exhibitions, concerts, discussions with artists, and German language learning courses.

The Radio Art Residency is an international fellowship programme launched by the Goethe Institute and the Professorship of Experimental Radio at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in cooperation with the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, Thüringer Landesmedienanstalt (Thuringian State Media Authority), Galerie EIGENHEIM Weimar/Berlin and ACC Gallery Weimar.

The programme provides a three-month residency in Weimar twice a year. The application deadline ends two months before each residency starts. The first »Radio Art Residency Weimar« will be taking place from 1 April to 30 June 2021.
