»Tag der Lehre und des Lernens 2023« – Help Shape the University

What role does university instruction play when it comes to supporting a sustainable society? And what individual role do I play in this?

Universities have a major responsibility when it comes to the necessary and unavoidable developments in our general society. This is where young people are prepared for the future and learn how to shape it. However, »the« university as a homogeneous entity does not exist; rather, it is made up and shaped by many individuals who contribute to meaningful processes of change.

This is the thought behind »Tag des Lehrens und Lernens 2023«, which plays host to university-wide events on 14 and 15 July during the annual summaery exhibition, including workshops, discussion sessions, and impetus talks to cooperatively reflect, discuss and expand upon our ideas about teaching and learning at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The event will focus on the topic of »sustainability«.

»At our university, we experience diverse and sometimes incompatible interests, cultures, perspectives and ways of working every single day: Our university is diverse and plural. The advantage this provides is a lively culture of contradictions. Bringing individualism and collectivity together, while also accepting differences, is the Presidium’s explicit goal«, says Dr. Simon Frisch, Vice President of Student and Academic Affairs. »The >Tag der Lehre und des Lernens< is the ideal platform for this. As many voices as possible should be heard and peaceful coexistence should be guaranteed«, continues Frisch. »Everyone is invited to participate in the events offered, which are meant to strengthen a culture of open dialogue and participation - something we actively support.«

Interested students are encouraged to attend summaery Friday’s  workshop on 14 July from 1 to 3 pm, titled »Fight your existential (climate) crisis: Transforming sustainability into action«. The workshop provides the opportunity to discuss the question of how sustainability and sustainability-related issues can be integrated into course content and curricula. Participants also have the chance to contribute their own ideas and perspectives. A panel discussion will continue this topic on the following day, Saturday 15 July, at 2 pm. Professors and other staff will explain the significance sustainability and climate justice has and should have for them personally and generally when it comes to teaching.

In addition, the »MITMACH-DING« mobile participation lab will be holding an informal meeting on Friday. The organisers hope to encourage cooperation between the university and the region, generate interest in the mobile lab, and recruit new participants. The »Learnraum.Bauhaus« project will also be presented and invites participants to explore hybrid teaching and learning strategies.

A highlight will be the ceremonial awarding of the 2023 teaching prizes scheduled for Sunday 15 July at 1 pm in the courtyard of the Main Building. The teaching prizes recognise outstanding teaching in previous semesters at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. In addition to the four teaching prizes awarded to the individual faculties, a prize for student teaching and a special prize for sustainability in teaching will be awarded. The teaching awards are based on nominations submitted by students and organised by the StuKo (Student Government).

The awarding of the prizes is planned to talk place again in the 2023/2024 winter semester with the intention of following up on feedback from students and instructors. Instead of an individual all-day event, the organisers wished to hold several shorter events spread throughout the year with the intention of permanently and sustainably developing the results.

The »Tag der Lehre und des Lernens« has become an established platform for discourse, insight and experiments on all aspects of studying, learning and teaching at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. All students, doctoral candidates, instructors and staff are invited to actively participate in the current developments at our university.
