Promoting Diversity, Fighting Discrimination, Creating Equal Opportunities: »Vielfalt gestalten« (shaping diversity) audit workshop on 12 May 2022
One year ago, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar launched its »Vielfalt gestalten« (shaping diversity) audit through a kick-off workshop. On Thursday, 12 May, a second workshop will take place as part of the audit and all university members are encouraged to join.
Following the theme of »Vielfalt fördern, Diskriminierung entgegentreten, Chancengleichheit verwirklichen« (promoting diversity, fighting discrimination, creating equal opportunities), the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will be participating together with seven other Thuringian universities in the German Stifterverband audit, which aims to firmly establish diversity and equal opportunities and to protect against discrimination at universities.
Various work groups were established at the kick-off workshop and have been dealing intensively with different issues over the past year. Issues ranged from staff selection and teaching, to providing counselling in discrimination cases and awarding scholarships. The challenges that diversity initiatives face at the university were identified and potential solutions have been discussed. Certain ideas and measures have already been implemented.
One such example is the »Diversity Guides« pilot project, which is currently being implemented to provide accessible contact persons for students while at the same time initiating campaigns and events that address the topic of diversity and protect against discrimination at the university. The guidelines developed in the »Leitfaden zu einer diversitätssensiblen Stipendienvergabe« formed the foundation for this year’s awarding of scholarships and is continually being developed. Through the redesign of advising services websites and the information film on the university’s advising services (currently in progress), the many existing support services can be found in one central location.
The second audit workshop is open to the entire university and will present the progress made by the work groups over the past year. We also hope to look forward together and develop a »Zukunftsvision Diversität« (future vision of diversity) at our university.
Prof. Dr. Andrea D. Bührmann, who is involved in the audit process, will be helping to support this endeavour by providing suggestions based on best-practice examples. Prof. Dr. Andrea D. Bührmann is the Director of Georg August University of Göttingen Diversity Research Institution and will be reporting on her experiences with the audit at the University of Göttingen in the workshop.
The workshop is scheduled to take place on 12 May 2022 from 9 am to 3 pm in digital format.
All university members are welcome to get involved and to help actively shape diversity, anti-discrimination and equal opportunity policies at the university.
